The SDET Manager brings this to life by contributing to technology development and decision-making and guiding the work of SDET engineers and teams. This person will be coming in at a time of growth, not only within ‘a’ single team, but across Vonage API - therefore this person will need to be prepared and experienced to scale processes & teams.
What you'll do:
- Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing team of SDETs to successfully deliver on ambitious product roadmaps on our Messaging API team
- Drive the development and execution of robust testing strategies for current and future product releases, ensuring comprehensive coverage of both functional and non-functional requirements.
- Treats AI assisted engineering as a core part of modern software practice, leveraging AI tools to enhance design, coding, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation, while guiding the team in adopting effective patterns and evolving best practices for AI enabled ways of working
- Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to design, develop, and optimize advanced test automation frameworks and maintain scalable, reliable data sets.
- Establish, track, and analyze quality and effectiveness metrics to inform decision-making, support continuous improvement, and ensure the highest standards of software quality.
- Proactively diagnose technical issues, report defects, and propose implementable solutions to prevent recurrence and improve product stability.
- Contribute to and influence the development of long-term technical solutions and quality strategies for the wider engineering department.
- Foster a culture of quality by developing and promoting processes that educate and empower engineers at all levels to write higher quality, testable software.
- Assess, optimize, and elevate current testing procedures and processes for efficiency, scalability, and alignment with business needs.
- Define and communicate clear team success metrics, ensuring ongoing alignment with the engineering organization’s strategic vision.
- Work collaboratively with engineering teams and stakeholders to ensure testing requirements, features, and protocols are well understood, supported, and implemented.
- Partner with product and business managers to translate software requirements and technical architectures into actionable, measurable, and testable criteria.
- Drive the implementation of non-functional testing strategies—including scalability, redundancy, chaos engineering, and automation—in cloud and hybrid/cloud-native environments.
What you'll bring:
- Engineering leadership skills - experience leading a team of 10+ Engineers at least
- Advanced knowledge of Python programming language
- Comprehensive experience in developing and running a continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines.
- Advanced knowledge of data structures, algorithms and distributed systems.
- Hands on experience with Docker or Kubernetes
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline, Masters would be advantageous
- Advanced understanding of and experience with writing, testing, debugging and perfecting code.
- Ability to:
- Navigate ambiguity.
- Present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a wide variety of audiences.
- Identify risks and threats in current and emerging technologies, procedures, features and operations.

What You Will Do
- Define and lead the performance engineering strategy across high-availability, cloud-native telecom platforms.
- Lead, train, and coordinate a distributed guild of SDETs across multiple feature teams, guiding them to build, maintain, and execute performance scripts (k6) within their fractional sprint capacity.
- Design, develop, and evolve scalable backend performance frameworks using k6, Python, Java, or TypeScript, focusing entirely on APIs, databases, and infrastructure.
- Implement and manage production traffic replay strategies (e.g., GoReplay) and complex multi-tenant test data generation to accurately recreate realistic production contention and load profiles.
- Own and drive performance, load, stress, endurance, scalability, and resilience testing, including chaos engineering practices (e.g., using AWS Fault Injection Simulator).
- Validate real-time communication systems, event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ), and high-throughput distributed systems under production-like conditions.
- Integrate performance testing into CI/CD pipelines, enabling continuous performance validation, shift-left practices, and automated PR blocking for latency degradation.
- Leverage observability tooling (Grafana, CloudWatch, Coralogix, VictoriaMetrics, PMM) to monitor, analyse, and troubleshoot system performance.
- Establish performance benchmarks, SLAs, SLOs, and error budgets aligned with business and system requirements.
- Collaborate with architecture and data teams to identify bottlenecks, validate database architectures (e.g., MySQL, Tungsten), and present evidence-based investment proposals.
- Analyse and optimise performance across both legacy monolith systems (requiring integrated load testing) and modern microservices architectures.
What You Will Bring
- Proven experience mentoring and coordinating testing efforts across large, distributed engineering teams (e.g., conducting code reviews, guiding SDETs through framework adoption, and managing cross-team test schedules).
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS cloud services (EC2, ECS, RDS, API Gateway) with a focus on scalability and performance optimisation.
- Proven expertise in performance testing tools (specifically k6, along with JMeter or Gatling), including test design, execution, and analysis at scale.
- Hands-on experience with production traffic shadowing or replay tools (such as GoReplay).
- Deep experience testing distributed systems, message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ), microservices architectures, and high-volume, low-latency APIs.
- Solid backend programming and scripting skills in Python, Java, or TypeScript to build custom performance frameworks and tooling.
- Strong understanding of system design, concurrency, throughput, latency, and fault tolerance principles.
- Experience implementing performance testing within CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and enabling continuous performance feedback loops.
- Hands-on experience with observability and monitoring tools (Grafana, Coralogix, PMM) for performance analysis and diagnostics.
- Experience working within Agile environments and translating performance insights into actionable engineering outcomes.
Required
- Demonstrable hands-on experience in backend performance engineering and automation using Python, Java, or TypeScript.
- Proven track record of performance, scalability, and resilience testing in AWS-based cloud-native systems.
- Strong experience designing large-scale performance test strategies and leading QA/SDET teams to execute them.
- Deep understanding of API performance testing, integration testing, and system-level non-functional validation.
- Solid grasp of system architecture, distributed systems behaviour, and non-functional testing methodologies.
- Experience with observability, monitoring, and log analysis tools.
- Familiarity with RESTful APIs and event-driven systems.

Vonage is looking for a hands-on SDET (Mid–Senior Level) to strengthen automation engineering across our modern microservices-based communications platform.
This role is deeply technical and delivery-focused. You will design and implement scalable automation solutions across UI, API, performance, and mobile layers, ensuring quality is embedded throughout the SDLC.
As part of the QA Centre of Excellence (QA COE), you will collaborate with engineering squads to build reliable, CI/CD-ready automation frameworks and promote best practices in BDD, microservices testing, and observability.
Your key responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks.
- Build UI automation using Playwright (TypeScript).
- Implement BDD practices using Cucumber/Gherkin.
- Generate structured reporting and living documentation using Serenity.
- Develop robust API automation for REST and GraphQL services.
- Contribute to mobile automation using Appium (Android/iOS).
- Ensure test frameworks are modular, maintainable, and optimised for parallel execution.
- Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, or internal tools).
- Validate distributed systems across a microservices architecture.
- Implement: contract testing, schema validation, authentication/authorization testing and resilience/failure scenarios
- Contribute to SLA/SLO validation and service-level reliability checks.
- Collaborate with engineers to improve testability and observability.
- Develop and maintain performance and load tests using K6 (TypeScript).
- Integrate performance testing into CI/CD pipelines.
- Analyse performance metrics using: Grafana, Prometheus, AWS CloudWatch Datadog
- Partner with SRE and Platform teams to identify performance bottlenecks and reliability risks
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Actively participate in Agile ceremonies.
- Work closely with Developers, DevOps, Product Owners, and Release teams.
- Maintain documentation in Confluence and track work in Jira.
- Provide visibility through Serenity reports and CI dashboards.
- Contribute to evolving QA engineering standards within the QA COE.
What you'll bring
Required:
- 5–8 years of experience in automation engineering or SDET roles.
- Strong hands-on experience with: Playwright (TypeScript), API automation (REST/GraphQL) and BDD frameworks (Cucumber/Gherkin)
- Experience working within AWS-based environments.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices testing.
- Experience integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines.
- Working knowledge of performance testing with K6.
- Strong coding, debugging, and analytical skills.
- Experience collaborating within cross-functional Agile teams.
Experience we consider a plus:
