The Role: 

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer for Embedded Systems. In this role, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. 

The electronic controls software team creates low level embedded software that orchestrates control for our quantum computers. In this role, you will work to expand the control scheduling and control flow of our quantum control system. This role requires working closely with research physicists, hardware engineers, fpga engineers, and other software teams at all stages of the software lifecycle.

We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead PCB design within the Agentic Computational Engineering (ACE) platform team and to encode the realities of space-electronics PCB design and manufacturing directly into our generative engine. In this role, you will own end-to-end PCB design — schematic capture, stackup definition, high-speed and mixed-signal layout, signal and power integrity, fabrication and assembly readiness — for flight hardware, and translate that hard-won expertise into the constraints, heuristics, and feedback loops that let our AI agents design boards that can actually be built, qualified, and flown.

You will work at the intersection of PCB design, space-grade manufacturing, and AI — pairing your own hands-on board work with software development that captures DfM, DfA, and DfT considerations as code. This role is ideal for someone who has personally laid out flight boards, knows what fabricators and assembly houses actually need to see on a drawing package, and is excited to guide the team and write the software that lets an agent reason about those same trade-offs. You will be joining the Agentic Computational Engineering (ACE) team, a specialized group within our Advanced Technology Development organization. We design agentic AI systems that pair deeply with physics simulation, test data, and modern manufacturing so that Design for Manufacturing (DfM), Design for Assembly (DfA), and Design for Test (DfT) are built into the very first line of code and the very first sketch of a design.

• Own the vision and execution of the PCB vertical of the Agentic Computational Engineering platform — defining how an agentic system should reason about end-to-end PCB design and manufacturing for space-grade flight electronics, and guiding the engineering team that implements it.
• Frame the problem space for the team: catalogue the design and manufacturing decisions a senior PCB engineer makes on a flight program (substrate and stackup, SI/PI, DfM/DfA/DfT, parts derating, fab and assembly liaison, qualification) and translate each into structured problems an agent can solve autonomously.
• Plan the PCB vertical's roadmap in lockstep with AI, simulation, manufacturing, and product leadership — sequencing capabilities, identifying high-leverage bets, and articulating clear success criteria for each agentic capability we ship.
• Educate the team continuously on space-electronics PCB design and manufacturing — running design-review walkthroughs, writing internal references, and turning your judgment into shared mental models the rest of the team can build against.
• Drive product taste for the PCB vertical: define what a great agent-generated design package looks like, what quality bar it must hit, and where the agent should defer to a human — so the team builds something that practicing PCB engineers actually trust.
• Lead testing and qualification of agent-generated designs — running design reviews, fabricating and assembling representative boards, and executing electrical, environmental (vibe, thermal, EMI/EMC), and radiation campaigns to evaluate real-world performance.
• Provide detailed, structured feedback to the team building the platform — turning every test, fab spin, and design review into specific, actionable signals that improve the agents, the constraint models, and the simulation tie-ins.
• Partner with fab houses, assembly houses, and component vendors to encode their real constraints — IPC class 3, NASA workmanship, lead times, parts availability, qualification artifacts — into the platform so generated designs are buildable on the first spin.
• Set the technical direction for AI-driven tooling in the PCB vertical (Python/C++ services, LLM-based agents, scripting), guiding engineers on how to decompose PCB-engineering judgment into agents that can make decisions autonomously and explain them.
• Represent the PCB vertical to Voyager hardware programs and external customers — communicating capabilities, limitations, and the roadmap with the credibility that comes from having designed flight hardware yourself.

• Design and derive advanced passive RF geolocation algorithms from first principles, with emphasis on TDOA, FDOA, and hybrid geolocation architectures across distributed sensor networks
• Develop coherent and non-coherent passive geolocation and imaging approaches, including phase-aligned multi-node processing for interferometric performance and robust envelope-based localization methods
• Apply statistical signal detection frameworks, including Neyman-Pearson, Bayesian, and CFAR methodologies, to maximize probability of detection across varying noise, interference, and target conditions
• Apply estimation and detection theory, including maximum likelihood estimation, error bound analysis, and linear algebraic methods, to formulate robust and analytically defensible localization solutions
• Model, simulate, and mitigate real-world nonidealities such as oscillator phase noise, timing jitter, calibration error, uncertain sensor geometry, and low-SNR operating conditions
• Develop, implement, and refine software for passive geolocation, emitter localization, and RF scene analysis using Python, MATLAB, C++, or related languages
• Translate mathematically intensive algorithms into efficient real-time implementations on DSP, GPU, or other accelerated compute architectures as system needs require
• Build high-fidelity simulation environments to evaluate geolocation accuracy, sensitivity, error budgets, and system tradeoffs before deployment
• Partner with hardware and systems engineers to define RF front-end and timing requirements by quantifying their effect on end-to-end geolocation performance
• Support algorithm integration, system calibration, test planning, and field validation in representative operational environments

Minimum Requirements:

• B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field
• 5+ years of relevant experience developing RF signal processing, estimation, or geolocation algorithms
• Strong foundation in statistical and time-domain signal processing, detection and estimation theory, backpropagation, and applied linear algebra
• Demonstrated experience developing passive RF geolocation algorithms, such as TDOA, FDOA, multilateration, direction finding, interferometry, or hybrid localization methods
• Experience applying rigorous detection frameworks such as Neyman-Pearson, Bayesian inference, CFAR, or related methods to noisy and contested RF environments

• Design and derive advanced passive RF geolocation algorithms from first principles, with emphasis on TDOA, FDOA, and hybrid geolocation architectures across distributed sensor networks
• Develop coherent and non-coherent passive geolocation and imaging approaches, including phase-aligned multi-node processing for interferometric performance and robust envelope-based localization methods
• Apply statistical signal detection frameworks, including Neyman-Pearson, Bayesian, and CFAR methodologies, to maximize probability of detection across varying noise, interference, and target conditions
• Apply estimation and detection theory, including maximum likelihood estimation, error bound analysis, and linear algebraic methods, to formulate robust and analytically defensible localization solutions
• Model, simulate, and mitigate real-world nonidealities such as oscillator phase noise, timing jitter, calibration error, uncertain sensor geometry, and low-SNR operating conditions
• Develop, implement, and refine software for passive geolocation, emitter localization, and RF scene analysis using Python, MATLAB, C++, or related languages
• Translate mathematically intensive algorithms into efficient real-time implementations on DSP, GPU, or other accelerated compute architectures as system needs require
• Build high-fidelity simulation environments to evaluate geolocation accuracy, sensitivity, error budgets, and system tradeoffs before deployment
• Partner with hardware and systems engineers to define RF front-end and timing requirements by quantifying their effect on end-to-end geolocation performance
• Support algorithm integration, system calibration, test planning, and field validation in representative operational environments
• Clearly document algorithm assumptions, derivations, performance limits, and test results for internal stakeholders and external customers
• This role will require periodic travel, up to 30%.

Minimum Requirements:

• B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field
• 5+ years of relevant experience developing RF signal processing, estimation, or geolocation algorithms
• Strong foundation in statistical and time-domain signal processing, detection and estimation theory, backpropagation, and applied linear algebra
• Demonstrated experience developing passive RF geolocation algorithms, such as TDOA, FDOA, multilateration, direction finding, interferometry, or hybrid localization methods
• Experience applying rigorous detection frameworks such as Neyman-Pearson, Bayesian inference, CFAR, or related methods to noisy and contested RF environments
• Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages for modeling, simulation, and implementation of signal processing algorithms
• Experience evaluating algorithm performance under real-world impairments, including low SNR, synchronization error, sensor geometry uncertainty, or interference
• Ability to translate theoretical models into practical software suitable for integration with RF/SDR hardware and production code bases
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly document technical approaches, assumptions, and performance results
• Must be able to work on-site 3-5 days per week in Hawthorne, CA or Washington, D.C.

Preferred Requirements:  

• M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field
• Current U.S. security clearance
• Deep expertise in passive RF geolocation, interferometric processing, distributed coherent sensing, or passive imaging architectures
• Demonstrated community-accepted (peer-reviewed) contributions to geolocation techniques
• Experience deriving estimators and analytical bounds such as maximum likelihood estimators, Cramer-Rao lower bounds, and geolocation error budgets
• Experience optimizing signal processing algorithms for real-time execution on GPU, FPGA, DSP, or heterogeneous compute platforms
• Experience taking algorithms from concept through simulation, integration, calibration, and field-test validation
• Ability to define system-level requirements for RF front ends, clocks, synchronization, and calibration based on algorithm sensitivity and accuracy analysis
• Expertise with software defined radios and associated RF signal processing toolchains
• Experience in military or other government environments performing related technical work in a fast-paced, mission-driven setting

We are seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Engineer to architect and implement software for our satellite systems. This is a hands-on role where you will work closely with our hardware, RF, and operations teams to develop high-reliability embedded software that powers our constellation.

You will act as a technical leader on our engineering team, taking system-level requirements and translating them into robust, efficient embedded solutions that operate in the harsh space environment. This position offers a unique opportunity to work across the full embedded stack: from low-level device drivers to application-level software managing satellite operations, all while contributing to the architecture of our next-generation satellite platform.

This is a full-time position based in Seattle, WA

Key Responsibilities
Python & C Development: Write high-quality, maintainable code in both Python and C for satellite command scripts and performance-critical embedded applications.
Embedded Linux Systems: Design, implement, and maintain embedded Linux systems for satellite payloads, including kernel configuration, driver development, and system optimization for resource-constrained space hardware.
Low-Level Driver Development: Develop and debug device drivers for common interfaces (SPI,I2C, UART, Ethernet) and peripherals including ADCs, DACs, DDR memory controllers, and custom hardware.
Flight Software Architecture: Contribute to the design and implementation of satellite flight software, including command & data handling, telemetry systems, and autonomous operations.
Hardware Bring-Up: Lead board bring-up activities for new hardware, working closely with electrical engineers to validate designs, debug interfaces, and commission new systems.
Space Environment Considerations: Design software with awareness of space-specific challenges including radiation effects (SEUs, latch-up), thermal constraints, and power budgets.

Expert-Level Python: Strong Python skills for scripting, automation, test frameworks, and ground system integration.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Expertise in developing signal processing and wireless communications systems (e.g., FSK/OFDM/MIMO, etc.) and hands-on experience with lab testing and characterization.

• Experience and knowledge on High Level Synthesis (HLS), silicon prototyping, FPGA development and emulation systems.
• Experience on bring-up of real systems in silicon/FPGA/SoC and use of lab test equipment such as oscilloscope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer, signal generator, etc.
