We’re looking for a talented Software Engineer to join our team. Our goal is to build out seamless cross-border payments involving both crypto and fiat currencies.  This role is pivotal in helping us overcome the challenges to ensure smooth trading processes together with streamlining liquidity management and automation. 

Traditional methods have often resulted in customers grappling with high transaction fees, lengthy delays, and the rigidity of having to choose between fiat and crypto transactions. With our innovative solution, we aim to break down these barriers by allowing a fluid interchange between crypto and fiat currencies. This hybrid solution will empower our customers to make international payments in their preferred format, whether it be entirely in crypto, entirely in fiat, or a mix of both. The role in a nutshell:

As a Lead Java Engineer at Luno, you’ll be at the core of our financial exchange transformation, through migrating and modernising our architecture to deliver resilient, high-performance trading systems. You’ll help design the backbone of our global exchange infrastructure, ensuring it scales reliably for millions of customers worldwide. Your mission will be:

• Architecture Migration: Lead the design and implementation of core exchange services as we migrate legacy components into a modern, modular Java-based architecture.
• System Optimisation: Analyse and optimise matching engine, order routing, and settlement workflows for latency, throughput, and fault tolerance.
• Scalable Design: Contribute to a globally distributed, high-availability trading platform with a strong focus on resilience, monitoring, and observability.
• Collaborative Delivery: Work closely with product managers, architects, and fellow engineers to ensure features are delivered on time and aligned with business and compliance needs.
• Technical Leadership: Guide design patterns, performance tuning, and best practices in large-scale system development.
• Code Quality & Governance: Maintain high-quality code standards with strong test coverage, documentation, and adherence to regulatory and operational controls.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, reduce technical debt, and streamline deployment pipelines.
• Mentorship: Coach and mentor engineers across the team, with a focus on scalable Java development and financial systems design.

A little about you:

• Proven Seniority: Proven experience as a senior or lead-level software engineer, with deep expertise in large-scale, distributed Java systems—ideally within financial markets, trading, or exchange infrastructure.
• Java Expertise: Strong proficiency with Java, JVM internals, concurrency, performance tuning, and frameworks such as Spring Boot. Experience with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.) is highly valuable.
• Financial Systems Understanding: A solid understanding of trading and exchange systems (order books, matching engines, risk management, or settlement workflows).
• Computer Science Fundamentals: Strong foundations in algorithms, data structures, networking, and global-scale system design.
• Architecture & Technical Change: A track record of driving architectural change, including re-platforming or migrating legacy systems to modern, scalable architectures.
• Leadership & Collaboration: Strong collaboration, leadership, and mentoring skills, with proven ability to guide teams through complex system migrations.
• Customer & Compliance Focus: Ability to balance technical design with reliability, compliance, and operational governance in a regulated financial environment

The role / Who we are looking for: 

• Transform our clients with effective technical end to end delivery. 

• Design and iterate on technical solutions which match the desired architectural landscape. 

• “Hands-on” leadership with regards to coding, leading by example and working to ensure the team is aligned and understands why not just what. 

• Work with the Delivery Manager to continually iterate and improve on ways of working, helping to develop the team and ensure the quality and pace of the objectives. 

• Lead on technical discussions 

• Own constructing “best practice” and sharing that within the team 

• Be a key part of Kerv’s technical leadership, helping shape the future of the company 

• Lead on communications with the client and any partners 

• Communicate with our clients throughout the development process. 

• Ensure the team delivers high standards of code quality, through peer-review, in team mentoring, etc. 

• Agile, both in the delivery methodology and in ability to technically react. 

• Champion the principles of accessibility (never deliberately excluding anyone) 

Skills & Experience: 

• Demonstrable and proven experience in full-stack applications (inc. working knowledge of a range of technologies such as React, Node.js and TypeScript and .Net). 

• Experience with Azure/AWS and ARM/terraform/bicep templates including dev and deployment of supporting cloud infrastructure (inc. pipelines). 

• Strong experience of continuous integration processes and pipelines. 

• Excellent, in-depth understanding of BDD, TDD and SOLID principles. 

• In-depth experience in rock-solid Object Oriented programming, enterprise integration skills and microservice architecture skills. 

• Extensive experience utilising multiple technologies to support the architectural design and team (e.g. Java, .Net, Node.js, C#, React, Angular, Spring, Kubernetes & Docker and Mobile experience) 

• Love clean code, love helping others achieve it 

• A good understanding of WCAG 2.2 would be preferable 

• Excellent verbal and written English skills.
