Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Refer

Senior Machine Learning Engineers at Thoughtworks build, maintain and test the architecture and infrastructure for managing machine learning applications. They are involved in supporting and contributing to the design of the end-to-end applications and products. They are responsible for building core capabilities including technical and functional machine learning systems and applications, being the anchor for functional streams of work and are accountable for timely delivery.
As a senior machine learning engineer, you will work on the latest tools, frameworks and offerings while also being involved in enabling credible and collaborative problem solving to execute on a strategy.
Job responsibilities
- You will contribute to design and drive the development of robust scalable architectures and infrastructure for deploying and managing machine learning (ML) applications, ensuring high availability, performance and security
- You will collaborate with data scientists and engineers to translate business needs into effective and efficient ML systems and applications
- You will own the development and maintenance of core functionalities within ML applications, including ML pipelines, model training and deployment, and monitoring and evaluation
- You will drive the functional stream of work by providing technical expertise, handling team discussions and ensuring timely delivery of assigned tasks
- You will stay ahead of the curve by actively exploring and implementing the latest tools, frameworks and offerings in the ML landscape
- You will facilitate collaborative problem solving within the team by actively listening, communicating effectively and mentoring other engineers
- You will contribute to the development and execution of the team's overall ML strategy, aligning technical capabilities with business objectives
- You will proactively identify and address challenges related to ML systems and applications, proposing solutions and implementing improvements
Job qualifications
Technical Skills
- You have experience in writing clean, maintainable and testable code, demonstrating attention to refactoring and readability of the code
- You are proficient in scripting languages such as Python or Shell for automation and task streamlining
- You have knowledge of distributed systems and scalable architectures to handle large-scale ML applications
- You have experience with building, deploying, and maintaining ML systems using relevant ML techniques and platforms, i.e.: Scikit-learn, Tensorflow, MLFlow, Kubeflow, Pytorch
- You have experience with building, deploying and maintaining ML systems and experience with application of MLOps principles and CI/CD to ML
- You have experience in machine learning engineering and data science, are familiar with key ML concepts, algorithms and frameworks, and understand ML model lifecycles
- You have experience with designing and operating the infrastructure required to run different types of ML training and serving workloads, i.e.: on-premise vs. cloud infrastructure, infrastructure as code, monitoring, etc.
- You have hands-on experience with on-premise and cloud services for building and deploying ML pipelines, i.e.: Azure, AWS, GCP or Databricks and associated ML managed services

Data Science at Nubank

As a Data Scientist, you’re expected to
- Interact with other team members to understand how to best apply data science and artificial intelligence to Nubank’s problems;

WHAT YOU'LL DO
As our customer base continues to grow with the excitement around BrazeAI, we’re expanding our team! Join our Forward-Deployed Data Scientist group of creative technical experts who partner with customers to ensure their success. In this role, you will:
- Collaborate with customer Analytics/BI teams and Braze colleagues on implementations, including use case definition, data integration, pipeline setup, and ML model configuration
- Extend product capabilities by improving architecture and developing reusable data pipelines, APIs, and components
- Work closely with the RL pipeline development team to refine and advance our reinforcement learning (self-learning) algorithms
- Contribute to shaping BrazeAI product strategy and roadmap through customer-facing insights and technical expertise
- Provide ongoing technical expertise to ensure successful adoption, measurable outcomes, and long-term customer success
WHO YOU ARE
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field required; Master’s or PhD in a relevant technical discipline preferred
- Experience: 3–5+ years of hands-on experience as a Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, or similar role working with large-scale data and production environments. Experience in customer-facing or consulting roles is strongly preferred
- Strong technical expertise: proficient in Python (Pandas) and core ML libraries (TensorFlow, Keras, scikit-learn, CatBoost, XGBoost). Skilled in SQL for querying/manipulating datasets, with experience in machine learning pipelines and model deployment
- Engineering best practices: you write well-structured, modular, documented code; follow strong development practices (Git, CI/CD, testing frameworks, type-hinting, code reviews); and can build scalable, maintainable solutions
- Nice-to-have skills: experience with DevOps tools (Airflow, Kubernetes, Terraform, GCP), data integration/ETL, and pipeline optimization, or reinforcement learning algorithms
- Customer collaborator: comfortable working directly with clients and cross-functional teams, aligning stakeholders, and translating technical concepts into clear business value
- Entrepreneurial problem-solver: you identify opportunities and risks early, troubleshoot obstacles, and drive creative solutions

WHAT YOU’LL DO
As our customer base continues to grow with the excitement around BrazeAI, we’re expanding our team! Join our Forward-Deployed Data Scientist group of creative technical experts who partner with customers to ensure their success. In this role, you will:
- Collaborate with customer Analytics/BI teams and Braze colleagues on implementations, including use case definition, data integration, pipeline setup, and ML model configuration
- Extend product capabilities by improving architecture and developing reusable data pipelines, APIs, and components

WHO YOU ARE

About the role
At AI Core, we are scaling the impact of our AI initiatives to become the primary driver of Nubank’s most critical decision systems. We are seeking an Lead Machine Learning Engineer (Applied AI Scientist) to lead high-impact research projects that bridge the gap between state-of-the-art AI and production-grade financial systems. You will be responsible for solving complex, ambiguous problems using Deep Learning and Foundation Models, ensuring our architectures are scalable, efficient, and driving measurable business results.
As an Applied AI Scientist (MLE), you’re expected to:
- Research Execution & Technical Leadership (Complexity & Autonomy)
- Lead and execute complex applied research initiatives independently, focusing on building and optimizing architectures (e.g., Transformers, GNNs) that can be deployed across critical use cases like Credit, RecSys, GenAI, and real-time inference.
- Address difficult and ambiguous modeling problems that require coordination across various stakeholders (Data, Infra, Product), delivering innovative solutions with a clear focus on medium-term impact.
- Bridge the gap between research and production by designing architectures that respect MLOps constraints, ensuring models are optimized for latency, interpretability, and cost-efficiency.
- Strategic Impact & Collaboration (Impact)
- Develop and deliver innovative solutions that address project-level challenges, focusing on pushing the latest platform and AI research improvements into downstream production models.
- Actively participate in cross-functional collaborations, ensuring that research outputs are seamlessly integrated into Nubank's decision-making engines.

What are we looking for?
- Professional Experience: 5-7+ years in applied AI/ML, with a proven track record of delivering research-driven systems into production environments
- Technical Mastery:
- Deep expertise in Deep Learning architectures (Transformers, Multimodal, or GNNs).
- Strong coding skills in Python and proficiency with frameworks like PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.
- Solid understanding of MLOps and the constraints of deploying models at scale.
- Problem Solving: Sophisticated skills in ML problem formulation and the ability to navigate uncertainty when data is messy or unavailable.
- Communication: Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical peers and cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring alignment and buy-in.
