Role
We are looking for a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to join our ML/AI team. This is a hybrid role based in San Jose, CA, reporting to the VP, AI and ML within the Engineering department.
You will drive innovation within our growing ML/AI team, focusing on critical cybersecurity use cases like agentic frameworks, threat detection, and anomaly detection. Your work will enable organizations worldwide to harness speed and agility through a cloud-first strategy while solving complex security challenges at scale.

What We’re Looking for (Minimum Qualifications)

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or a related technical field

10+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or Scientist, with a proven track record of delivering successful projects in cybersecurity

Strong proficiency in Algorithms, Game Theory and Optimization, Verification, and ML libraries and frameworks

Extensive experience in data modeling, feature engineering, model development, and error analysis

Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to stakeholders and peers
What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)

Proven track record of designing, building and shipping end-end applications at scale, with familiarity with multi-agent systems and orchestration frameworks

Deep expertise with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP for AI workloads

Strong experience with agent architectures and SOTA AI frameworks, along with contributions to open-source ML projects or top-tier research publications

What You’ll Do
- Design, implement, and evaluate novel machine learning and deep learning algorithms, concentrating on Large Language Models (LLMs), automated speech recognition (transcription), and unified multimodal architectures.
- Iterate on AI model development, starting from the data needed for training, architecture, input/output representations, evaluation, and deployment for complex sequence-to-sequence and multimodal tasks.
- Collaborate with other research engineers to prototype and validate complex solutions from academic literature in natural language processing and speech.
- Conduct experiments to benchmark new techniques and evaluate model behavior.

About the Opportunity:

Identify complex fraud patterns and their technical root causes through detailed data mining and analysis, including identification of sophisticated fraud methods employed by actors who are deliberately trying to avoid detection.

Serve as technical SME by sharing new data mining techniques, maintaining technical reference documentation, and interfacing with partner technology teams.

Collaborate across business and technology stakeholders to communicate analytical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

We are looking for a Lead Staff Data Scientist to join the Marketplace Quality Engineering (MQE) team. MQE is a cross-functional team responsible for the integrity, performance, and trustworthiness of The Trade Desk’s inventory marketplace. We build systems that detect and prevent fraud, measure and improve inventory quality, and optimize marketplace dynamics to deliver better outcomes for advertisers, publishers, and consumers.
In this role, you will provide technical and strategic leadership within MQE by defining data science roadmap and execution plans, owning end-to-end development of advanced modeling, analytical, and measurement systems, and partnering closely with engineering, product, and business leaders to translate complex requirements into trusted, scalable solutions.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Technical Ownership
- Own the data science vision and roadmap for MQE initiatives, aligning technical direction with strategic goals and industry trends.
- Design, build, and productionize statistical and machine learning models to detect fraud, invalid traffic, and low-quality inventory in adversarial, large-scale environments.
- Define and maintain metrics, experimentation procedures, and monitoring systems to ensure long-term performance.
- Develop analytical and explainability frameworks that provide clear visibility into how quality initiatives impact inventory supply, advertiser spend, and marketplace dynamics.
Cross-Functional Impact
- Collaborate with product and business stakeholders to translate analytical insights into clear, defensible decisions and marketplace enforcement strategies.
- Partner closely with engineering to deploy scalable, performant models.
- Anticipate emerging marketplace risks and proactively develop data-driven solutions to protect marketplace integrity.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Act as a staff-level technical leader, setting standards for analytical rigor, model evaluation, and scientific best practices across MQE.
- Mentor and develop data scientists through design reviews, technical guidance, and career coaching.
- Influence technical direction across teams by driving alignment, knowledge sharing, and a culture of high-quality decision-making.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Applied Math, Operations Research, or similar.
- 7+ years of experience working in a DS role that involves bringing products from ideation to production.
- Deep expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning, and large-scale data analysis.
- Strong understanding of experimentation, causal inference, and metric design in complex systems.
- Familiarity with large-scale data and ML tooling (e.g. Spark, distributed training, real-time inference systems).

Data scientists at TTD work closely with engineering throughout the lifecycle of the product, from ideation to productionization and monitoring. Our data scientists are end-to-end owners. You will participate actively in all aspects of designing, researching, building, and delivering data-focused products for our clients and traders.
We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to design, build, and scale data driven solutions powering our forecasting, pacing, and recommendation systems for our emerging channels. You will develop advanced machine learning or deep learning models that directly influence planning, allocation and performance on our platform.
The main job directions include:
- Develop forecasting models using statistical, ML and deep learning approaches.
- Build and optimize pacing algorithms that balance short-term performance with long-term objectives and constraints.
- Build custom solutions tailored to our unique environment, where off-the-shelf models often don’t scale effectively.
- Collaborate with product teams to understand business goals and translate them into actionable data science solution.
- Work closely with engineering teams to deploy models from prototype to production, ensuring smooth integration into products.
- Define success metrics, conduct offline evaluation and online experiments (A/B testing), and measure business impact.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
We do not expect you to know every technology we use when you start at TTD. What we care most about is that you can learn quickly and solve complex problems using the best tools for the job. However, we find that the most successful candidates typically come in with something like the following experience:
- BS/MS with 5+ years or a PhD with 3+ years of experience working in a DS and ML role that involves bringing products from ideation to production.
- Experience in building ML model in always-on production system and working with diverse technologies and data sources
- Strong experience in one or more of: forecasting, pacing systems, or recommendation systems.
- Proficient in Python
- Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
- Experience running heavy workloads on a distributed computing cluster (especially EMR or Databricks), leveraging technologies like Spark to work with large datasets.
