Summary
The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the MediaWiki Platform team. MediaWiki is the open-source platform that powers Wikipedia and its sister projects - impacting hundreds of millions of Wikipedia users across the globe.
The MediaWiki Platform team builds and maintains the core of MediaWiki as well as the components responsible for authentication, notifications, and media management. The team’s mission is to provide a solid foundation for feature teams to build on. It focuses on performance, reliability and scalability, helping to ensure broad and equitable access to free knowledge.
This role offers a unique opportunity to combine technical depth with mission-driven impact. As a Senior Engineer, you will not only write robust code but also lead by example, prioritize high-impact work, support better decision-making through metrics and observability and foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Important: We are a fully remote team. Your working hours will need to overlap with UTC-2 to UTC+3 time zones to accommodate members of your team around the world.
You will be responsible for:
- Designing, improving, and maintaining key parts of the MediaWiki stack;
- Driving technical quality and operational excellence by defining and reinforcing standards in testing, observability, and system reliability;
- Comfortably and autonomously creating proofs of concept, writing design documents, and breaking down complex projects into actionable tasks to support less experienced team members;
- Developing and improving shared capabilities (e.g., authentication, caching, rate limiting) that enable other teams to build efficiently and consistently;
- Championing key product metrics by focusing on measurable outcomes that guide our decisions and help us to evaluate success;
- Leading by example in code review, decision-making, and team culture - fostering transparency, empathy, and collaboration;
- Improving and automating processes for identifying, tracking, and resolving production issues;
- Collaborating with the Product team and the community to ensure technical solutions align with WMF strategy, feature teams and volunteer contributor needs;
- Coaching and mentoring teammates to support continuous growth and confidence in both technical and interpersonal skills.

Requirements:
- Commitment to the Foundation's Mission and Values;
- Extensive experience in backend software engineering;
- Familiarity with platform or infrastructure products that serve internal or external engineering teams;
- Experience with databases and event streams, including schema design, query optimization, and efficient data access patterns;
- Deep understanding of software architecture, testing methodologies, and system design;
- Strong experience in observability practices: setting up metrics, logging, monitoring, and alerting;
- Familiarity with incident response, root cause analysis, and follow-up processes;
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and automated test infrastructure.
Additionally, we’d love it if you have:
- Experience developing frameworks (designing for reuse, extensibility, stability, and backward compatibility);
- Proficiency in PHP and JavaScript;
- Familiarity with identity management, including OAuth;
- Experience with Kubernetes ecosystem, including Envoy;
- Experience with Prometheus and Grafana;
- Experience defining and working with SLAs/SLOs or other production reliability frameworks;
- Prior experience with MediaWiki or Wikimedia projects;
- Contributions to open-source software;
- Experience working in a fully remote, distributed team.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a remote-first organization with staff members including contractors based 40+ countries*. The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$113,082 to US$175,725 with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay. The Browser AI team are building core browser features, and exploring new ideas about how the personal nature of the browser can help create the best AI experience for research and creative tasks. Brave allows the user to attach tabs, history, bookmarks and files to AI conversations. Brave also allows the user to experiment with AI joining in with its own web browsing. We’re looking for a new team member capable of iterating these ideas and creating beautiful user experiences for these features. UI engineers will often work with other engineers to create the end-to-end features, or develop the skills necessary to implement the entire feature themselves.

Responsibilities will include:
- Implementing browser-integrated Web UI (e.g. AI conversations, browser settings, new tab page) using Typescript, JavaScript, HTML and CSS with React as well as other frameworks such as Web Components, Svelte and Lit
- Working with our product development team to collaborate on designs and specs and bring them to life on Brave’s desktop and mobile browsers
- Integrating with custom browser APIs using Chromium’s communications frameworks.
- Helping to customize the native UI provided by Chromium to add new product features and modify existing features. These UI elements include toolbars, modals, buttons, and more
- Delivering code which is well tested with high confidence
- Working alongside and learn from our experienced Chromium engineers - helping with peer reviews and helping improve our engineering processes
Required experience:
- Strong skills building complex web apps with state management

You are a seasoned software engineer with experience building security features in large-scale systems. You will be working primarily on our MediaWiki platform which powers Wikipedia. As a top 10 website, we must meet stringent performance standards while addressing new security challenges such as supporting modern authentication technologies, detecting and preventing platform abuse from bots, and planning and rolling out improvements to our security architecture by defending against emerging threats.
You are responsible for:

The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Product Safety and Integrity team and build new security features to protect Wikipedia and our other projects. This is a very hands-on engineering role, working alongside a team of engineers and product managers to design and implement new features to protect and reassure our users and to ensure the platform remains resilient against attacks.
You are a seasoned software engineer with experience building security features in large-scale systems. You understand the importance of testing and documentation, and common pitfalls in developing secure web applications. You have a passion for the WMF mission. You will be working primarily on our MediaWiki platform which powers Wikipedia. As a top 10 website, we must meet stringent performance standards while addressing new security challenges such as supporting modern authentication technologies, detecting and preventing platform abuse from bots, and planning and rolling out improvements to our security architecture by defending against emerging threats.
You are responsible for:
- Helping design, develop, and deliver security features, with safety and security in mind
- Working with other engineering teams to ensure that they make safe and compliant architectural and implementation choices
- Leading by example in code review, decision-making, and team culture — fostering transparency, empathy, and collaboration
- Developing, reviewing, and deploying security features developed by the Foundation and community members
- Conducting internal and external security and privacy reviews
- Performing maintenance and addressing technical debt in security and privacy-critical components
- Providing support for application security and privacy incidents and operations
Skills and Experience:

- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally with focus on security or privacy
- Ability to work effectively in a modern web application – ours is mostly PHP and JavaScript

Summary
The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Product Safety and Integrity team and build new security features to protect Wikipedia and our other projects. This is a very hands-on engineering role, working alongside a team of engineers and product managers to design and implement new features to protect and reassure our users and to ensure the platform remains resilient against attacks.
You are a seasoned software engineer with experience building security features in large-scale systems. You understand the importance of testing and documentation, and common pitfalls in developing secure web applications. You have a passion for the WMF mission. We operate in a highly transparent manner, and the work we do touches thousands of editors every day.
You will be working primarily on our MediaWiki platform which powers Wikipedia. As a top 10 website, we must meet stringent performance standards while addressing new security challenges such as supporting modern authentication technologies, detecting and preventing platform abuse from bots, and planning and rolling out improvements to our security architecture by defending against emerging threats.
You are responsible for:
- Helping design, develop, and deliver security features, with safety and security in mind
- Working with other engineering teams to ensure that they make safe and compliant architectural and implementation choices
- Leading by example in code review, decision-making, and team culture — fostering transparency, empathy, and collaboration
- Developing, reviewing, and deploying security features developed by the Foundation and community members
- Conducting internal and external security and privacy reviews
- Performing maintenance and addressing technical debt in security and privacy-critical components
- Providing support for application security and privacy incidents and operations
Skills and Experience:

- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally with focus on security or privacy
- Ability to work effectively in a modern web application – ours is mostly PHP and JavaScript

- Driving technical quality and operational excellence by defining and reinforcing standards in testing, observability, and system reliability;

The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Product Safety and Integrity team and build new security features to protect Wikipedia and our other projects. This is a very hands-on engineering role, working alongside a team of engineers and product managers to design and implement new features to protect and reassure our users and to ensure the platform remains resilient against attacks.
You are a seasoned software engineer with experience building security features in large-scale systems. You understand the importance of testing and documentation, and common pitfalls in developing secure web applications. You have a passion for the WMF mission. We operate in a highly transparent manner, and the work we do touches thousands of editors every day.
You will be working primarily on our MediaWiki platform which powers Wikipedia. As a top 10 website, we must meet stringent performance standards while addressing new security challenges such as supporting modern authentication technologies, detecting and preventing platform abuse from bots, and planning and rolling out improvements to our security architecture by defending against emerging threats.
You are responsible for:
- Helping design, develop, and deliver security features, with safety and security in mind
- Working with other engineering teams to ensure that they make safe and compliant architectural and implementation choices
- Leading by example in code review, decision-making, and team culture — fostering transparency, empathy, and collaboration
- Developing, reviewing, and deploying security features developed by the Foundation and community members
- Conducting internal and external security and privacy reviews
- Performing maintenance and addressing technical debt in security and privacy-critical components
- Providing support for application security and privacy incidents and operations
Skills and Experience:
We value the right mindset and potential over a checklist of specific experiences, and these are the traits we’ve identified that make great additions to our team so far.
- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally with focus on security or privacy
- Ability to work effectively in a modern web application – ours is mostly PHP and JavaScript
- Deep PHP experience isn’t required, if you have enough experience in engineering, and back-end web development, to learn it and be useful
- Driving technical quality and operational excellence by defining and reinforcing standards in testing, observability, and system reliability;
- Comfortably and autonomously creating proofs of concept, writing design documents, and breaking down complex projects into actionable tasks to support less experienced team members
- Experience in developing secure software or security and privacy-related product features
- A strong interest in working with a talented security team and learning more specialist security skills such as exploiting and mitigating application-level vulnerabilities
- Ability to explain complex security issues and their implications on privacy and risk to non-technical audiences
- Sensitivity to the security and privacy challenges faced by participants in a large, international project
- Experience working in a remote, distributed team
Additionally, we’d love it if you have:
- Experience working on anti-abuse mechanisms, such as detecting bots or coordinated activity
- Previous experience building security countermeasures against attacks on technologies at the web, backend, and database level
- Experience finding and fixing security bugs and reviewing code for security gaps
- A working knowledge of threat modeling, secure design patterns and privacy by design
- Prior experience with MediaWiki or Wikimedia projects
- Contributions to open-source software

Salaries at the Wikimedia Foundation are set in a way that is competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values and culture. The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$113,082 to US$175,725 with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay. For applicants located outside of the US, the pay range will be adjusted to the country of hire. We neither ask for nor take into consideration the salary history of applicants. The compensation for a successful applicant will be based on their skills, experience and location.
