Overview

As a Senior Space Systems Engineer, you’ll play a key role in developing cohesive system architectures and ensuring the effective integration of spacecraft subsystems to meet mission objectives. This position is a Senior Space Systems Engineering role, focused on the engineering of space systems, rather than a systems engineer for space. We’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of how complex subsystems interact and impact overall system performance.   

What You’ll Do

• Oversee and perform system-wide architecture design, ensuring subsystems function cohesively and meet overarching system goals
• Lead detailed technical efforts and spearhead trade studies of space system architectures
• Identify and address gaps between requirements and top-level objectives, constraining broad problems and decomposing them into actionable tasks to implement solutions
• Support the sourcing and selection of key suppliers, components, and technologies
• Integrate spacecraft components, ensuring cohesive system functionality and compatibility across all subsystems
• Define Key Performance Parameters, select quantifiable metrics, and determine modeling approaches to directly address and answer key design questions in physics-based modeling and simulation efforts
• Lead small multi-discipline teams on spacecraft design, space mission design, and R&D projects
• Assist proposal capture efforts, including private/public, DoD, OGA, and other commercial partnerships
• Conduct comprehensive system analyses, including risk assessments, reliability analyses, and trade studies to optimize system performance
• Participate in design reviews, ensuring that designs meet mission requirements, are feasible, and incorporate best practices
• Support hardware-in-the-loop testing to validate integrated system performance in simulated operational environments 
• Provide technical guidance to junior engineers 

 Your Ideal Background

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical engineering discipline
• 5+ years of experience working on satellite systems with direct involvement in flight programs and the entire Validation and Verification chain
• Ability to define and lay out solutions to ambiguous problems
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Capable of identifying and solving complex problems with little to no supervision or direction 
• Expertise in the space environment, commercial space operations, and/or robotics 

Preferred 

• Direct involvement in flight operations or launch campaign  
• Hardware Validation and Verification experience 
• Proficiency with Python, Matlab, STK, Ansys, and/or JAMA 
• Experience in orbital mechanics / astrodynamics

Compensation and Benefits: Your base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. The anticipated salary range for this role is $130,000 - $180,000 annually.

What You’ll Do 

1. Architect vision-based navigation systems for autonomous space missions
2. Define and evaluate algorithms for pose estimation, feature tracking, and sensor fusion

Your Ideal Background

Required 

1. Bachelor’s or higher degree in Aerospace, Robotics, Computer Vision, or related field
2. 5+ years experience in navigation, state estimation, or computer vision systems
3. Strong experience with computer vision techniques (e.g., SLAM, visual odometry, feature detection)
4. Proficiency in Python and/or C++ for algorithm development
5. Experience deploying algorithms to real-world or flight-like systems

Autonomy isn't a feature at True Anomaly, it's our competitive advantage. In space-to-space operations, victory is measured in milliseconds. When spacecraft operate in contested, unpredictable environments beyond reliable communication range, autonomous decision-making becomes the difference between mission success and failure. Human-in-the-loop isn't fast enough. Pre-programmed responses aren't adaptive enough. 

As Head of Autonomy, you'll define and scale the technical vision that enables our spacecraft to act, not react. You'll build systems that make optimal decisions under uncertainty in close-proximity operations, anticipate adversary behavior, and execute maneuvers without waiting for ground commands. This role owns the autonomy roadmap end-to-end, from foundational algorithms to flight-certified systems deployed across multiple product lines. 

You'll lead a small, elite team and shape how we design, validate, and deploy autonomous capabilities that outpace any competitor or adversary. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Own the autonomy vision and technical roadmap for all True Anomaly products, translating strategic objectives into concrete algorithmic capabilities and delivery milestones 
• Build autonomous decision-making systems for close-proximity space operations in contested environments where communication delays, sensor uncertainty, and adversary adaptation demand real-time intelligence 
• Develop game-theoretic frameworks for multi-agent space scenarios, modeling adversary behavior, optimal response strategies, and equilibrium concepts for space domain awareness and defensive operations 
• Integrate machine learning where it provides measurable advantages such as Multi Agent collaboration, anomaly detection, pattern recognition, and adaptive behavior, while maintaining the rigor and reliability required for safety-critical spaceflight 
• Recruit and mentor a world-class autonomy team, leveraging your network to bring in specialists across game theory, optimal control, and machine learning 
• Collaborate cross-functionally with GNC, flight software, simulation, mission ops, and hardware teams to ensure autonomous algorithms integrate seamlessly into operational spacecraft 
• Drive maturation of research into flight-ready capabilities, balancing innovation with the certification requirements and risk posture of operational space systems 
• Design and implement optimal control algorithms for spacecraft maneuvering, resource allocation, and mission planning under constraints (fuel, time, sensor coverage, risk tolerance) 
• Represent True Anomaly's technical vision externally, publishing research, engaging with the autonomy community, and establishing our credibility as leaders in the field 

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Deep expertise in at least one of these three pillars, with working knowledge of the others:  
• Game theory—Nash equilibria, multi-agent systems, adversarial reasoning, differential games, or pursuit-evasion problems 
• Optimal control—MPC, trajectory optimization, Hamilton-Jacobi reachability, dynamic programming, or stochastic control 
• Modern ML/AI—reinforcement learning, imitation learning, transformer architectures, or other learning-based approaches 
• PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Control Theory, Applied Mathematics, or related field (exceptional MS + extensive experience considered) 
• 8+ years developing autonomous systems for real-world applications, with at least 3 years in technical leadership 
• Demonstrated ability to ship autonomous systems  
• Proven track record recruiting, mentoring, and leading technical teams 
• Strong publication record or patents demonstrating thought leadership in autonomy, control, or multi-agent systems preferred 
• Ability to obtain a security clearance (active clearance strongly preferred) 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE 

• Experience with space systems (orbital mechanics, GNC, spacecraft operations) 
• Hands-on expertise with C++ and Python for algorithm development and embedded deployment 
• Familiarity with probabilistic reasoning, state estimation (EKF/UKF, particle filters), and planning under uncertainty 
• Background in verification/validation of autonomous systems for certification or operational deployment 
• Network of top-tier autonomy talent 
• Has written papers for research that pushed the field forward or solved hard real-world problems 
• Can articulate why game theory is essential for space operations and how optimal control enables mission success

True Anomaly is seeking a highly accomplished Chief Engineer, Host Vehicle to lead the technical execution of a next-generation missile defense program. This is a generational opportunity to architect a solution to some of the most challenging mission sets in missile defense, not to mention aerospace engineering as a whole. About the Team:

The Development Fleet Operations team is responsible for the safe testing and operation of the newest technologies. As an Operations Specialist you will contribute to the daily driving and testing of autonomous trucks, own the safety of the operation, and provide feedback on system performance and behaviors while hauling commercial freight.

1. Support spacecraft flight test by executing fault detection test campaigns, integrated system communication tests, functional and performance verification tests, and flight software sequencing tests
2. Build an understanding of spacecraft rendezvous, capture, and pose estimation software and assist in its integration into multi-axis hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) spacecraft testbed.
3. Develop and maintain existing software to interface to spacecraft hardware subsystems, utilizing communication standards such as UART, TCP/IP, and CAN.
4. Document custom hardware interface APIs for internal and external users, focusing on hardware functionality and reliability features.

Complex algorithms are essential to unlocking this vision. This is the domain of GNC Engineers. You’ll primarily focus on the design, build, test, analysis and in orbit operation of the GNC system central to our rendezvous and proximity operations spacecraft and Space Domain Awareness (SDA) products.

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture and Investigation

• Architect solutions necessary to accomplish space mission objectives around space domain awareness and RPOD with an emphasis on autonomy, from both a hardware and software perspective.
• Evaluate and select appropriate techniques to achieve mission such as machine learning methods, physics-informed solutions, stochastic methods, Kalman Filters, etc.
• Assist in proposal capture efforts with feasibility analysis and engage with private/public partners, Department of Defense, Other Government Agencies, and other commercial partnerships.

Architecture Design

• Develop architecture, lead trade studies and lead GNC team from conceptualization to flight for RPOD missions
• Design algorithms, simulations, and tools for orbit determination, state estimation, uncertainty propagation to support SDA efforts
• Analyze and source datasets for training and validation or algorithm performance.
• Build and test modeling and simulation tools for orbital/cislunar dynamics, sensor modeling, and visualization.
• Six degree of freedom modeling, simulation and validation of space craft dynamics, sensors and algorithms, including for RPOD missions.

Implementation

• Collaborate with the software and GNC teams to implement algorithm in flight software.
• Heavily support hardware-in-the-loop testing for integrated system validation.
• Design concepts of operations (CONOPS) that balance thermal, power, momentum and communications for spacecraft missions.
• Provide mission operations training and support.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical engineering discipline
• 5+ years of experience working in guidance, navigation, and control
• Software development experience in Python
• Experience developing, debugging, and deploying GNC sensors, effectors and algorithms that have been used in real world applications/projects
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere
• Proven ability to lead a project from conception to completion

Desired:

• Experience with cradle-to-grave spacecraft design, testing, verification/validation and in-orbit mission operations
• Expertise in either guidance, navigation or control
• Experience with multi-body astrodynamics
• Experience with Git, Linux and Basilisk
• Software development experience in C/C++
• Capable of identifying and solving complex problems with little to no supervision or direction
• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal

Additional Requirements:

Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Compensation and Benefits:  

Your base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. The anticipated salary range for this role is $180,000 - $280,000 annually.
