What You'll Do
As a Principal Software Programmer of the Media Services team, you'll provide technical leadership for the platform powering real-time voice communication across Fortnite and the Epic Games ecosystem at massive scale. Your role
As a Sr. Software Engineer on the Tel Core team, you are the steward of our media engine’s evolution. You will bridge the gap between high-level product goals and technical execution, ensuring our telephony stack remains resilient as we scale. You’ll mentor peers and shape the long-term roadmap while fostering a culture of engineering excellence. Your success is defined by the seamless, high-quality audio experience of millions of users.
This position reports to an Engineering Manager in the Telephony Core team and has the opportunity to be based in either Vancouver or Kitchener, Canada locations
We don’t mind if you come from a different engineering background or haven’t worked in real-time media before. Just be excited to learn, to contribute to the team, and to build a fast, reliable, elegant product that delights our customers.
What you’ll do
- Maintain and modernize the real-time services that run on the Telephony Engines. Architect backend libraries and APIs to integrate with the broader Telephony Platform.
- Build and optimize low-latency media pipelines for voice and video—tuning codecs, RTP flows, and congestion-control behavior to deliver consistently clear conversations over unreliable networks.
- Investigate and resolve complex production issues across PSTN, WebRTC, and carrier boundaries using Telephony Engine logs, PCAPs, observability tools, and data-driven experimentation.
- Run load, failover, and regression tests on Telephony Engines and backend services to validate scalability, resilience, and capacity limits
- Partner with Tel Cloud, Tel Edge, Calling, and AI teams to design end-to-end call flows and integrations
- Participate in on-call and release rotations, owning Terraform- and GKE-backed rollouts, monitoring health, and driving follow-ups that continuously make the platform safer and easier to operate.
- Shape the Tel Core roadmap by turning broad epics into clear designs and mentoring other engineers.
Skills you’ll bring
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including owning substantial production backend systems in a SaaS or real‑time communications environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in coding with AI agents to accelerate development and improve code quality.
- Deep expertise in C/C++ and Python.
- Experience with (or strong interest in learning) SIP, WebRTC, RTP/RTCP, DTLS/SRTP, and media codec negotiation in a production setting.
- Experience troubleshooting and improving real‑time media quality (e.g., jitter, packet loss, choppy audio, codec issues) is a strong plus.
- Comfortable working on KTLO (bugs, refactors, upgrades) as well as strategic roadmap items, and using data to prioritize impact.
- A deep understanding of reliability engineering, including the ability to build observability into services, eliminate performance bottlenecks, and manage the lifecycle of safe software releases.
- A strong sense of urgency, personal agency, and customer empathy.

About the role:
The Platform Frontend team is focused on building and maintaining a robust platform that supports all frontend development. This team oversees key areas like architecture, design patterns, frameworks, libraries, UI components, development environments, tools, and deployment processes. As a member of the Platform Frontend team, this role focuses on building desktop screen capturing, auditing and analytics gathering systems for QA, legal and compliance reasons and extracting insights to automate workflows and remove inefficiencies.
Responsibilities:
- Play a substantial role in the platform frontend engineering team.
- Work with Cresta product and engineering teams, build and continuously improve the Cresta platform and new product requirements.
- Stay closely with customers and their requirements, analyze the technical tradeoffs, own the customer facing deliverables.
- Constantly identifies product improvement opportunities and generates product improvement ideas.
- Demonstrate the engineering best practices in deliverables and daily work. Uphold others to the same high standards.
- Technical ownership in a substantial part of the Cresta product and platform.
- Enhance compliance and QA processes by building rules-based screen capturing systems to help provide detailed information about agent desktop activity.
- Support PII/PCI redaction through trigger conditions based on detailed desktop and browser activity.
What we are looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field. Strong Computer Science fundamentals.
- Strong experience building native desktop applications on Windows and/or macOS, including deep familiarity with OS-level APIs (Win32, AVFoundation, ScreenCaptureKit, etc.).
- Experience implementing screen capture and recording systems, including video/audio pipelines, performance optimization, and multi-monitor/window capture.
- Low-level systems programming expertise, including concurrency, memory management, IPC, and working beyond browser sandbox limitations.
- Proven ability to design and own complex client-side systems, making architectural tradeoffs between native, Electron, and browser-based approaches.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals with 8+ years of experience and a track record of technical ownership.
- WebRTC, Chromium, or Electron experience is a plus, but deep native desktop expertise is preferred.

About the Role
We are seeking a visionary Director of Embedded Systems Engineering to serve as the strategic architect of our firmware organization. In this leadership role, you will hold full authority over the technical roadmap, team scaling, and operational processes for all Inspiren embedded systems. You will not simply manage existing headcount; you will strategically build a high-performance department capable of delivering complex, connected solutions across R&D, NPI, and sustaining engineering. You will be the primary driver of integrating AI-augmented engineering workflows to accelerate development cycles and set the global standard for how we collaborate with our JDM partners.
What You'll Do
- Strategic Team Building: Own the organizational design and long-term hiring strategy for the embedded systems team. You will proactively identify talent gaps and build a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and collaboration.
- Process Architecture: Define the methodologies for modular, testable, and hardware-flexible platforms. You will establish the comprehensive technical playbooks, coding standards, and architectural expectations that govern how work is performed.
- AI-First Engineering Evangelism: Act as the lead expert and educator on the integration of AI tools within the firmware lifecycle. You will identify and implement AI-driven automation for code generation, unit testing, and predictive maintenance to multiply the team's output.
- JDM & Vendor Orchestration: Lead the technical relationship with our JDM partners. You will define the specifications and interface points that allow external teams to act as a high-velocity extension of our internal core.
- Technical Roadmap Oversight: Provide strategic direction across Inspiren's core technology pillars:
- Multi-Modal Perception & Sensing: Oversee the firmware strategy for Radar (mmWave), Optical Perception, and High-Fidelity Audio, ensuring low-latency processing and high-integrity data fusion.
- Communication & Protocol Architecture: Architect a robust roadmap for multi-protocol utilization (WiFi, BLE, LoRa, Thread). You will lead the design and optimization of these channels to ensure mission-critical reliability and uptime.
- Silicon & Platform Strategy: Manage the long-term roadmap for SoC selection and the "porting pedigree" required to move smoothly between silicon vendors (NVIDIA, MediaTek, Qualcomm, etc.).
- Operational Excellence: Serve as the final word on fleet-wide OTA delivery, secure boot processes, and HIPAA-compliant data handling across the entire embedded ecosystem.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Serve as the technical bridge between firmware, hardware, and clinical teams, ensuring a unified systems-level approach to safety and reliability.
What You Bring
- Educational Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 12+ years in embedded systems engineering with 5+ years in a senior leadership role. You have a proven track record of building and scaling engineering departments for high-volume, mission-critical IoT ecosystems or sophisticated consumer electronics where reliability, connectivity, and hardware-software integration are paramount.
- Technical Skills:
- Strategic Systems Architecture: Expert knowledge of the full embedded landscape (MCU-based RTOS to MPU-based Embedded Linux) and expertise in defining high-level architectures for complex, low-power IoT ecosystems involving multi-modal sensing.
- AI-Augmented Development: Practical experience implementing AI-driven CI/CD pipelines and LLM-assisted tools to accelerate the firmware lifecycle while maintaining code quality.
- Global Resource Management: Demonstrated success managing JDM/ODM partnerships in Asia through clear technical documentation and rigorous quality accountability.
- Protocol Mastery: High-level expertise in designing and optimizing wireless communication channels and networking stacks for ultra-reliable IoT performance.
- Perception Hardware Oversight: Comprehensive understanding of firmware requirements for mmWave radar, optical sensors, and VoIP/WebRTC audio stacks.
- Security & Compliance: Mastery of the firmware development lifecycle (SDLC) including secure boot, encrypted telemetry, and HIPAA-compliant data handling.

- Performance Tuning: Profile CPU and memory usage and optimize audio algorithms (AEC, AGC, Noise Suppression) for ARM-based SoC architectures.
- Lead Embedded Systems Projects: Oversee the end-to-end development and performance optimization of firmware for a variety of both microprocessors and microcontrollers.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with hardware, application, ML, and platform engineers, Product Managers, key-stakeholders, and our JDM partners to define product and system requirements.
- Mentor, Innovate, and Optimize: Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies. Introduce new methodologies and technologies to both enhance performance and meet design specifications, and help your team grow. Provide deep technical expertise and support in embedded systems development, testing, and validation across the product lifecycle.
- Ensure Quality, Reliability, and Compliance: Leverage your experience making great technical design decisions, lead decision-making on prototyping options, conduct testing, and validate embedded system performance and reliability against requirements, including security, environmental, and accelerated testing. Ensure all embedded software meets regulatory standards and industry best practices. Set quality and reliability specifications.
- Solve Problems: Troubleshoot and diagnose complex, real-world issues - then recommend and implement effective solutions in a timely manner.
What You Bring
- Educational Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Embedded Systems, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering field.
- Experience: 7+ years of hands-on experience across the embedded landscape, including Bare-metal and RTOS development for microcontrollers, and Embedded Linux for microprocessor-based systems.
- Real-Time Audio: Deep understanding of digital audio fundamentals (PCM, sample rates, bit-depth), compression standards (Opus, G.711, AAC), and Linux (ALSA, PipeWire, GStreamer).
- Networking Protocol Guru: Proven expertise in VoIP architectures and the WebRTC ecosystem with the ability to explain the nuances of NAT traversal, firewall punch-through, and ICE in your sleep.
- Programming Proficiency: Proficiency in embedded development, coupled with robust analysis and debugging capabilities utilizing tools (Coverity, Valgrind, GDB) and methodologies (SWD, JTAG).
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential for thriving in our fast-paced, remote-first, dynamic environment, where adapting to changing priorities is key. Start-up experience is a plus!

- The annual salary for this role is $180,000 - $200,000 + equity + benefits (including medical, dental, and vision)
