Senior Software Engineer Job Description

Senior Software Engineer will develop information systems by studying operations; designing, developing and installing software solutions; support and develop software team. The Senior Software Engineer will lead a team of developers responsible for building new and support existing websites.

Ability to prioritize well, communicate clearly, have a consistent track record of delivery and excellent software engineering skills. Creative engineering balanced with high quality and a customer focus. Must be able to work across multiple facets of the project and juggle multiple responsibilities at the same time. Responsibilities:

• Develop software solutions by studying information needs; conferring with users; studying systems flow, data usage and work processes; investigating problem areas; following the software development lifecycle

Qualifications:

• Master's degree in in appropriate field of study
• 5+ years of experience as a software engineer
• Fluent with functional, imperative and object-­oriented languages; knowledge of Java, Scala, or Clojure, or JavaScript would be especially useful
• Either strong OOP or Functional Programing and modeling skills
• 4+ years professional experience in professional web development
• Fluent in JavaScript and PHP
• Experience coding, testing and documenting Drupal themes – including all front end functionality and templates – and modules – using contributed modules and developing custom modules as needed
• Experience working in an agile environment
• Experience building complex web systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
• Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project
• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams and management to collect requirements, identify tasks, provide estimates and meet production deadlines
• Experience with mission critical, 24x7 systems
• Experience implementing and consuming large scale web services
• Experience developing software utilizing workflow or ESB software
• Experience with professional software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing and operations

As our new Senior Data Engineer, you will become part of our growing Data Insights and Science team. • Identify, collect, and integrate data from various sources by building high-quality data pipelines and data models for analytics and business intelligence (BI) purposes.
• Develop and optimize code to enable pipelines at minimum cost and ease of maintenance.
• Build monitoring procedures & tools to ensure solid ETL flows and data quality.
• Design processes and tools to correct ETL incidents.
• Collaborate with CRM developers, data scientists, data analysts, and product owners to ensure the supplied data supports the business initiatives.
• Consult our data analytics teams to ensure best practices on the technical use of data are followed.
• Design data architectures and collaborate in data migrations in cloud environments.

• Experience in data engineering, big data, business intelligence, or data science. 
• Experience in Spark, Python, Scala, or similar.
• Excellent SQL skills enabling large-scale data transformation and analysis.
• A comprehensive understanding of cloud data warehousing, data pipelines and data transformation (extract, transform, and load) processes and supporting technologies such as Google Dataflow, Looker, DBT, EMR, CI/CD Pipelines, Airflow DAGs, and other analytics tools.
• Experience with cloud-based data infrastructures (Ideally GCP, but AWS or Azure would also suffice)
• Programming experience in Javascript, Python, or similar.
• Expertise in managing databases, including performance tuning, backup, and recovery.
• Solid knowledge of data quality management best practices, including data profiling, data cleansing, and data validation
• Knowledge of strengths and limitations of visualization tools (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau, Looker, etc.) in terms of data modeling in the visualization tools.
• Understanding of versioning control tools like GitHub to changes related to dbt models and transformations, ensuring that changes are tracked, documented, and reviewed by the appropriate stakeholders.
• Knowledge of applying data governance principles, policies, and practices that ensure data accuracy, consistency, and security
• Knowledge of Kubernetes would be an advantage

• Proficiency in Python. Experience in JVM based programming language (Java, Scala, Kotlin) or GO is highly desirable
• Proven experience with large-scale data processing systems and modern data warehousing 
• Strong grasp of classical ML and Fundamental understanding of modern ML algorithms (e.g. DNN, RL, transformers ) and mathematical optimizations e.g LP, Convex Optimization

We have over 400 engineers across Monzo who design and build our in-house banking platform. We have big ambitions for the future, and technology plays a big role in creating a bank our customers want, so engineers at Monzo collaborate across disciplines to solve interesting challenges throughout the company.

These range from the products our customers use everyday to underlying infrastructure, security, payments and finance, customer operations, financial crime, and data, to name just a few areas. As a bank, there is scope for impact across a huge number of opportunities.

What you’ll be working on: 

We rely heavily on the following tools and technologies:

• Go to write our application code (there’s an excellent interactive Go tutorial here)
• Cassandra for most persistent data storage
• Kafka for our asynchronous message queue
• Envoy Proxy for RPC
• Kubernetes and Docker to schedule and run our services 
• AWS for most of our infrastructure
• React for internal web dashboards
• We also have two physical datacenter sites with actual cables to connect to various third parties

Your day-to-day   

This role is all about collaborating across disciplines to test hypotheses and make a difference to customers. As a product backend engineer you’ll work in a squad alongside product managers, marketers, user researchers, designers, mobile engineers, web engineers, data analysts, business analysts, writers and more! 

Together you’ll build and support a particular part of Monzo. Our product squads belong to our wider collectives (a word we use to describe self-governing business units of ~100 people). They are; Money, Borrowing, Fincrime, Customer Operations, Platform, Personal Banking & Business Banking. They’re all looking for additional Backend Engineers right now, we do a standard interview process across all our collectives and at the end we will find the best match for you based on your skills, experience, preferences and aligning with the business need! 

Our backend engineers have a variety of different backgrounds. As long as you enjoy learning new things, we’d love to talk to you. We do not ask for formal qualifications or degree requirements for any of our engineering roles.

You should apply if:

• you have strong experience working on the backend of a technology product
• you want to be involved in building a product that you (and the people you know) use every day
• you have a product mindset: you care about customer outcomes and you want to make data-informed decisions
• you’re comfortable working in a team that deals with ambiguity
• you’re interested in distributed systems and writing resilient software
• you have some experience with strongly-typed languages (Go, Java, C, Scala etc.).
• you think you’d enjoy the kind of work we’re doing

The Interview Process:

Our interview process involves three main stages: 

1. Initial Call 
2. Take home task or pair coding exercise 
3. Final interview including a system design and a behavioural interview
