Our veterinarians help pets and their parents with quality of life assessments, pain and anxiety management, end-of-life consultations, and peaceful euthanasia in the comfort of their pet’s favorite place – home.

Position Description:
Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice, headquartered in Lutz, FL., seeks to add a key member to its growing team by employing a dynamic Hospice Care Nurse to support our Hospice Care Team, an extension of Lap of Love’s Practice Operations department. This individual will play an instrumental role in Lap of Love’s day-to-day operations by providing support to our veterinarians throughout the nation to ensure the utmost quality of care for our hospice patients. This individual’s role will include monitoring existing hospice cases and assuring timely follow-ups, encouraging re-checks with our doctors, assisting veterinarians with prescription refills, providing resources to families, reviewing and managing the library of hospice write-ups, and becoming a resource to our Support Center team for veterinary related questions on an ad hoc basis.

We are seeking an experienced Certified/Registered Veterinary Technician with impeccable knowledge of senior, geriatric, and terminally ill hospice cases to fulfill the role of Hospice Care Nurse. The ideal candidate will possess the knowledge and communication skills to help guide families through hospice care for their pet and effectively support the veterinarian with these cases.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor existing hospice cases averaging 10 or more cases per day (250 per month)
  • Determine useful resources for families and assist in providing as needed
  • Act as point of contact for area veterinarians
  • Encourage re-checks with veterinarians based on the needs of each family
  • Monitor hospice appointments to ensure they are being performed exceptionally, updated properly on the appropriate software, and that all follow-up procedures are completed in a timely manner
  • Review hospice write-ups for quality and completeness and communicate with veterinarians for any clarifications needed
  • Act as a point person for families to contact with questions
  • Handle and escalate any client concerns or questions (example: dissatisfaction during the appointment, etc.)
  • Authorize prescriptions/refills as indicated by the veterinarian (the appointment record should have written authorization already- i.e., “authorize 3 refills of Gabapentin”)
  • Ability to comfortably talk a family through the end-of-life process or decision
  • Work with leadership to investigate areas of opportunities for growth
  • Work with the Support Center to answer any questions that might arise regarding hospice cases
  • Responsible for developing blog content several times a year to further educate families

Requirements

Experience, Education and Requirements:

  • Certification in veterinary care - CVT, LVT, RVT or equivalent required
  • Familiarity with multiple old-age related illnesses, quality of life, and disease management decisions preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years of Client Care experience
  • Confident, independent thinker, and self-starter
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to work with others and respect their views
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with limited supervision
  • Excellent follow-up skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • This position is a remote role requiring the ability to work independently. Hours may vary and some evening and weekend availability may be necessary to complete the necessary job functions

Physical and Other Job Requirements:

  • Able to sit for prolonged periods of time of up to 8 hours per day
  • Able to frequently communicate by telephone and through use of computer technologies, including but not limited to email, text, and video conferencing
  • Possess manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to operate a computer, read a computer screen and type on a keyboard for prolonged periods of time of up to 8 hours per day
  • Able to multitask using multiple computer tabs/platforms while engaging in conversation
  • Average or above average working knowledge of computers, email, video conferencing technologies, and digital medical records
  • Able to quickly learn custom software and other programs, such as Zoom, Sunshine, and Google Suite
  • Average or above average working knowledge of the internet and scheduling and communications applications and software, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and web-based communication platforms
  • Access to reliable and secure internet
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient, client, and business information
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines
