What to expect:

We are seeking a Trade Compliance Officer to support UK/EU/Swiss trade compliance activities in a highly-regulated, high‑technology environment.

The Trade Compliance Officer will act as a subject matter expert (SME) for export controls, sanctions and customs compliance, supporting the business in the development, manufacture and international transfer of controlled goods, software and technology.

The role is responsible for interpreting and applying UK/EU/Swiss trade regulations in a practical manner, enabling compliant business operations. You will partner closely with internal teams—including Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, and Legal—to ensure compliant import/export activities, licensing, and documentation while enabling business growth.

What you’ll be responsible for:

Act as the primary point of contact and subject matter expert for UK/EU/Swiss export controls, sanctions and customs compliance, providing clear and commercially pragmatic guidance to the business. Support business decision-making by assessing compliance risks in transactions, supply chains and projects, proposing risk mitigation strategies, and managing export authorisation requirements, including licensing assessments, applications and ongoing compliance with licence conditions. Determine and maintain export control and customs classifications, and monitor regulatory developments across the UK, EU and Switzerland, advising stakeholders on the implications for the business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing, implementing and continuously improving trade compliance policies, procedures and training programmes.
  • Maintaining compliance records, reporting and audit readiness in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting internal audits, risk assessments and compliance reviews, including root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Leading or supporting internal investigations into potential compliance issues, including preparation of disclosures where required.
  • Conducting restricted-party screening and due diligence, including assessment of ownership, control and intermediary risks within supply chains.
  • Overseeing compliance aspects of import/export transactions, including documentation and controls for cross-border movements.
  • Developing and managing Technology Control Plans and controls on intangible technology transfers.
  • Reviewing international travel, technical data and information flows for export control implications.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Business, International Relations, Law, or a related field (or equivalent experience), with at least 5 years’ experience in UK/EU trade compliance. Strong knowledge of UK/EU export controls and EU/UK sanctions regimes, with the ability to interpret complex legal and regulatory requirements and apply them in a practical, commercial context.

Experience working with export control and customs classifications, licensing systems (e.g., SPIRE), and emerging technology controls, including those relating to quantum technologies.

Key requirements include:

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with technical teams and senior leadership.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Capability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • A proactive and solutions-focused approach to compliance risk management and business support.
