About this Staff Software Engineer, CI/CD role at The New York Times

The New York Times · Hybrid · New York, NY

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

The Developer Platforms mission at The New York Times builds the foundational platforms, tooling, and paved paths that help product teams ship high‑quality experiences quickly and safely. Our Application Delivery team owns the shared software delivery platform(CI/CD, artifact management) and deployment workflows used by hundreds of engineers across News, Cooking, Games and Audio to ship software.

As the Times leans into AI‑assisted and agentic development, Application Delivery is where those changes become real. You will set the technical direction for how AI‑generated and agent‑driven change flows safely, observably, and at scale through CI/CD.

You'll help teams reduce release risk with modern deployment patterns, and turn effective delivery practices into reusable pipelines and templates that scale across the organization, much like our GenAI platform roles turn internal practices into reusable tools and agents. When you improve this platform, you change how The New York Times ships software.

This is a hybrid role based two days in our New York City headquarters. You will report to the Engineering Manager of the DevEx Application Delivery team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical direction of software delivery as a shared product: shape paved paths in our shared platform that improve code health, release quality, and delivery speed for product teams.

  • Set the technical direction for agent‑ready delivery: design the policy, guardrails, and paved paths that turn AI‑generated and agent‑driven changes (migrations, test generation, pipeline maintenance) into safe, observable releases at scale by partnering with our Developer AI team.

  • Collaborate with Product, engineering leaders, and internal users to shape the roadmap for the delivery platform and bring measurable impact on quality and speed.

  • Deliver scalable, secure, and observable software delivery systems and workflows that improve reliability, and overall software quality and velocity.

  • Champion engineering excellence in delivery by setting best practices for testing, deployment strategies, progressive delivery, and observability that are easy to adopt through the platform.

  • Mentor engineers across the mission, contribute to hiring, and help foster an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture centered on shared platforms and high‑quality software delivery.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our mission and values and a commitment to our purpose to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience building the technical strategy and driving software delivery (Github Actions, Argo CD or equivalent CI/CD systems) or similar platform work with broad organizational impact beyond operations.

  • Experience building and scaling a platform as a product for internal engineers with multi-tenancy serving many teams through self‑service paved paths, with attention to adoption, backward compatibility, and isolation/guardrails between tenants

  • Demonstrated proficiency in building and maintaining production services in one or more general‑purpose programming languages (e.g., Go, Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Java), including code review and debugging complex issues.

  • 5+ years of experience with containers, Kubernetes, package management tools(Helm or equivalent), IAC tools(Terraform or equivalent), Gitops‑based deployment workflows and cloud services such as AWS, GCP.

  • Experience using delivery and productivity metrics (e.g., DORA, SPACE) and platform observability to measure and improve release quality and delivery.

  • Proficiency with GenAI‑assisted developer tooling (e.g., Cursor, Copilot, or Claude Code) and judgment about how to integrate agentic workflows into CI/CD safely.

  • Experience leading cross‑team technical work, communicating trade‑offs, and building understanding among diverse partners including Product, platform, and product engineering teams.

  • Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to artifact/package management (e.g., Artifactory or similar) with attention to security, retention, cost, and ease of use for engineers.
