About this Senior Electronics Engineer role at Oxford Ionics

Oxford Ionics · Oxford, England, United Kingdom

Quantum is now, and it's built here.

Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve.

Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.

What to expect:

We are looking for a Senior Electronics Engineer to join our Systems team at Oxford Ionics/ IonQ In this role, you will be responsible for the design, manufacture and testing of electronics subsystems, contributing to the team’s mission of building the most performant Quantum computers. You’ll play an important part in shaping the design and architecture of the electronics deliverables that support our work in building the world’s most advanced quantum systems.

What you’ll be responsible for:

In this position, you will work on schematic capture, PCB layout, board and system level testing. In addition to designing drive solutions for QPU architectures, contributing to the successful delivery of both current and next-generation quantum systems.

You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to existing projects, design for new systems as well as continuous improvement activities, contributing directly to the success of the hardware team

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing mixed-signal systems (analogue/digital interfacing).
  • High-speed PCB layout using tools like Altium Designer, with a heavy focus on signal integrity.
  • Modelling and simulation (e.g., SPICE) for precision instrumentation.
  • Hands-on testing with oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers to verify quantum control hardware.

Requirements

To be successful, you will need strong foundations in high-speed digital design, hands-on experience with the Altium PCB toolset, and familiarity with the Sinara/ARTIQ hardware ecosystem. We’re looking for someone who can translate complex physical requirements into robust hardware, bridge the gap between physics and engineering teams, and turn experimental prototypes into rack-ready production systems while contributing effectively within a fast-moving, highly technical team.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • Strong Altium toolset knowledge: Proven track record of managing complex schematics, rigid-flex designs, and advanced constraints for signal integrity.
  • Experience of FPGA implementation & bring-up: Familiarity with Xilinx/Intel toolchains (Vivado/Quartus) and high-performance carriers (e.g., BittWare XUP series or Sinara/ARTIQ hardware).
  • Experience of Copper & Optical Networking: Knowledge of SFP+/QSFP-DD interfaces, 10/100G Ethernet protocols, and high-speed differential pair routing.

A bonus would be experience with cryogenic environments, RF/microwave engineering (up to 500 MHz), or Python-based test automation.

Benefits

Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role, you’ll join a world class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.

We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.

Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.

We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
