A superb opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and talented lawyer to join the legal team at DC Thomson, a leading privately owned UK media organisation headquartered in Dundee.

Our legal team is small, collaborative and highly impactful. We operate a partnering model, giving each lawyer real ownership and the opportunity to build strong relationships with leaders and colleagues across the business. This creates a broad and varied role, combining autonomy with close teamwork across legal, governance and risk functions. 

Reporting to the General Counsel, you will act as the primary legal partner to key areas of the business, including our puzzles and energy communities, and our subscription and product and technology teams. You will also support other areas of the business as required. 

You will provide pragmatic, commercially focused legal advice, supporting business objectives while ensuring appropriate risk management and governance. This includes drafting and negotiating contracts, advising on legal and regulatory matters, supporting policy and process development, and working with external counsel where needed. 

Requirements

  • UK qualified solicitor with c.3+ years’ PQE, gained in a leading private practice firm and/or in-house environment. We are open to considering candidates with a wider range of experience where their skills and career aspirations align with the scope of the role. 
  • Strong commercial legal experience, including drafting and negotiating supply and consumer contracts (across goods, services and digital/technology products) 
  • Good working knowledge of intellectual property, data protection and wider consumer and commercial compliance matters 
  • Awareness or experience of AI and data governance considerations in a business context 
  • A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach with strong commercial acumen 
  • Ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels across a complex organisation 
  • Confident communicator with strong negotiation and presentation skills 
  • Organised, resilient and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment 
  • Experience using AI tools to support legal delivery 
  • Exposure to media, technology or TMT sectors would be advantageous but is not essential 
  • Core Skills: Relationship management, business risk management, contract management, information assurance, business process improvement
