Schmidt Ocean Institute is a virtual institute that operates the research vessel Falkor (too). The ship and its assets are available at no cost to scientists worldwide working to explore, discover and understand the ocean. Schmidt Ocean catalyzes ocean exploration and research and educates and engages the public to inform the wise stewardship of the planet.

Schmidt Sciences works to deepen human understanding of the natural world and develop solutions to global issues with science and technology. The core focus areas of the organization include: AI and advanced computing, astrophysics and space, biosciences, climate and cross-science programs.

11th Hour Racing works with the sailing community and maritime industry to advance solutions and practices that protect and restore the health of the ocean.

Agog is a groundbreaking initiative at the intersection of technology, communications and social impact. The organization helps creators and nonprofit leaders harness the power of extended reality (XR) technologies to spur positive social transformation, opening new avenues for empathy, understanding and activism. 

The Schmidt Initiative for Long Covid advances clinical care for Long Covid patients globally. The organization works to raise the level of Long Covid care and understanding around the world by connecting specialists and primary care providers to support patients and share knowledge virtually, in real time.

The Office of Eric Schmidt aims to support Eric Schmidt in his personal and professional endeavors, advance the mission of his philanthropic and for-profit entities, and drive forward his initiatives. The Office of Eric Schmidt encompasses: 1) a personal administrative and research team (EST), 2) a political team (OneOne), 3) a technology team (Technical Projects Group), 4) an event management team for Eric’s personal and professional events (Community), and 5) his personal communications team. 

The Community Team designs and executes best-in-class convenings across Schmidt Entities. We are looking for an intern to join the Community Team from September 8 - December 21 (with the possibility to extend) who is eager to learn about the planning and execution of a wide range of convenings for various programs and initiatives across our organizations. 

This is an in-person position, based in our Crystal City, VA office. Interns are expected to work primarily from their assigned office during regular business hours, collaborating closely with team members on-site to support events and internal operations. 

This internship offers hands-on experience in the operations, strategy, logistics, and creative production of convenings, while also providing opportunities for professional development, relationship-building, and cross-office collaboration. Interns will work part-time, with occasional travel for cross-office experiences and event support. Each intern will own a defined project aligned with the Community Team’s priorities and will present their work during an end-of-summer showcase. 

Key Responsibilities

Event Planning Support: Collaborate with the Community Team to plan and execute events and convenings for various programs and initiatives. This includes coordinating with program teams, external vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes. 

Project Coordination: Help coordinate logistical aspects of events, including booking venues, managing travel arrangements, coordinating with vendors, and ensuring smooth operations. 

Event Execution: Assist with on-site event support, including set-up, logistics, and troubleshooting during the event. Coordinate with external vendors to ensure a seamless attendee experience. 

Administrative Support: Provide administrative support to the Community Team, including scheduling, note-taking, and other administrative tasks as needed. 

Post-Event Follow-Up: Participate in debrief and feedback sessions with the Community Team after events to gather insights and identify areas for improvement. 

Skills and Qualifications

Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, with a talent for building relationships and engaging with various stakeholders. 

Attention to Detail: Meticulous in completing tasks and ensuring quality in all aspects of work. 

Collaborative Attitude: A team player who enjoys working with others to achieve shared goals. 

Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 

Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with the ability to adjust to changing priorities. 

Comfort with Ambiguity: Comfort working with incomplete information and shifting priorities. 

Confidentiality and Integrity: Demonstrated commitment to maintaining confidentiality and high ethical standards. 

Technical Proficiency: Experience with event-management platforms, relational databases, or project management tools (Airtable preferred). 

Education and Experience: Current enrollment or a recent graduate from a two or four-year degree program; experience in event coordination or a professional office environment is a plus. 

On-Site Flexibility: Flexibility to travel within the U.S. (up to 10% of the time) on an as-needed basis, circumstances permitted
