Through innovative programs such as the GWV Fellowship, Career Connector, and workforce development initiatives, Generation WV helps individuals build meaningful careers while strengthening communities across the state.
Position Summary
Generation WV is seeking a creative, organized, and enthusiastic Communications & Marketing Intern to help tell the stories of our programs, participants, employers, and partners. This internship provides hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing, digital communications, event promotion, photography, content creation, and brand management.
The ideal candidate enjoys writing, social media, photography, and graphic design and is passionate about showcasing the people and communities shaping West Virginia's future.
Primary Responsibilities
Content Creation
- Write engaging social media posts highlighting participant success stories, events, and organizational updates.
- Assist in drafting newsletters, blogs, website content, and email communications.
- Interview program participants and alumni to develop compelling stories demonstrating program impact.
- Support the creation of promotional materials for programs and events.
Social Media Management
- Assist with planning and scheduling content across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other platforms.
- Monitor engagement and recommend strategies to increase audience reach.
- Research current social media trends and identify opportunities to improve engagement.
- Help maintain an organized content calendar.
Graphic Design & Multimedia
- Design graphics using Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Capture photos and video during Generation WV events and trainings.
- Edit short-form videos for social media and promotional campaigns.
- Organize and maintain the organization's digital photo and video library.
Website & Digital Communications
- Assist with website updates to ensure program information remains current.
- Support email marketing campaigns and monitor performance metrics.
- Help maintain consistent branding across digital platforms.
Event Support
- Assist with promotion of workshops, conferences, networking events, and Fellowship gatherings.
- Provide on-site communications support including photography, social media coverage, and attendee engagement.
- Help prepare event materials, signage, and promotional items.
Marketing Research & Analytics
- Track social media and email marketing performance.
- Research best practices in nonprofit marketing and workforce development communications.
- Prepare basic reports summarizing engagement metrics and campaign results.
Administrative Support
- Maintain organized communications files and marketing assets.
- Participate in staff meetings and brainstorming sessions.
- Assist with special projects as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Current college student or recent graduate pursuing Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Graphic Design, Digital Media, or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation.
- Experience using Canva and Google workspace is a plus.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a remote team.
- Passion for West Virginia and Generation WV's mission.
