Fragrance Compounding Supervisor

Position Summary

The Fragrance Compounding Supervisor leads and oversees the day-to-day operations of the fragrance compounding team, ensuring that all batches are measured, mixed, and produced accurately, safely, and in compliance with formulas, SOPs, and quality standards. This role combines hands-on technical expertise in fragrance compounding with team leadership, scheduling, training, and process oversight to ensure consistent, high-quality output and a safe, efficient production floor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the daily compounding operation by managing employee performance, attendance, productivity, and adherence to company policies while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

  • Lead by example in a hands-on production environment by actively participating in compounding operations, operating forklifts and production equipment as needed, and providing direct floor support to the team.

  • Train, coach, and mentor compounding team members on proper measuring techniques, raw material handling, equipment operation, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), where applicable.

  • Accurately measure, weigh, and compound raw materials, fragrances, and essential oils in accordance with approved formulas, batch sheets, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Apply expert knowledge of raw material characteristics, including:

    • Odor

    • Color

    • Viscosity

    • Density

    • Chemical reactivity

  • Use this knowledge to troubleshoot issues, ensure product quality, and support production teams.

  • Serve as the primary point of escalation for:

    • Technical questions

    • Production discrepancies

    • Quality issues

    • Process deviations during compounding operations

  • Review and approve:

    • Batch records

    • Production documentation

    • Compounding paperwork

  • Verify accuracy, completeness, and compliance before and after production.

  • Ensure all products meet established quality standards by:

    • Verifying formula accuracy

    • Monitoring process controls

    • Investigating deviations

  • Monitor raw material inventory levels by:

    • Identifying shortages

    • Reporting quality concerns

    • Communicating replenishment needs to support uninterrupted production

  • Ensure mixing tanks, scales, pumps, forklifts, and other production equipment are:

    • Operated safely

    • Cleaned

    • Inspected

    • Maintained in accordance with SOPs and preventive maintenance requirements

  • Comply with and enforce all company safety policies and procedures, including:

    • Safe handling of hazardous materials

    • Proper use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Champion a strong safety culture by:

    • Conducting safety observations

    • Identifying workplace hazards

    • Ensuring OSHA and company compliance

    • Participating in incident investigations

    • Supporting corrective actions

  • Establish, monitor, and report key performance indicators (KPIs), including:

    • Safety

    • Quality

    • Productivity

    • Inventory accuracy

    • Schedule attainment

    • Team performance

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve:

    • Compounding processes

    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

    • Best practices

    • Work instructions

  • Lead cross-functional projects and process improvement initiatives to:

    • Improve efficiency

    • Reduce waste

    • Support business objectives

  • Partner with Maintenance and approved vendors to coordinate:

    • Equipment repairs

    • Preventive maintenance activities

    • Continuous improvement initiatives

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in fragrance or flavor compounding, including demonstrated experience training or leading others.

  • Prior supervisory or team lead experience in a production or manufacturing environment strongly preferred.

  • Extreme attention to detail and accuracy when measuring, weighing, and blending raw materials.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and enforce adherence to written formulas and batch instructions.

  • Solid working knowledge of:

    • Lab equipment

    • Production machinery

    • Calibration procedures

    • Basic equipment troubleshooting

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods.

  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Working knowledge of:

    • OSHA regulations

    • Hazardous materials handling

    • Manufacturing safety standards

Preferred Qualifications / Ways to Stand Out

  • Memorized understanding of the properties and interactions of commonly used:

    • Essential oils

    • Aroma chemicals

    • Resins

  • Trained ability to:

    • Distinguish fragrance top, middle, and base notes

    • Identify off-notes, contamination, or formulation inconsistencies

  • Experience implementing or improving:

    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

    • Training programs

    • Quality control processes

  • Familiarity with BatchMetrics.

Base Salary: $70k-$100k

Actual compensation will vary based on factors such as experience, skills, location, internal equity, and other relevant business considerations. Osmo regularly reviews pay ranges and compensation structures to ensure they remain competitive, equitable, and aligned with current market data.
