Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS) was established in 1972 and is a non-profit organization with a status free open-door policy. KAFS is dedicated to empowering the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities of Kamloops and surrounding areas. KAFS provides culturally appropriate programs and inclusive services that meet the needs of urban Indigenous people to become healthier, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting to the Family Violence Prevention Manager, the Family Violence Prevention Caseworker is responsible for providing direct support, advocacy, and case management to individuals and families impacted by family violence. This role aims to support clients in achieving safety, stability, and well-being through culturally sensitive, trauma-informed approaches. The Caseworker will also work collaboratively with community resources and the family violence prevention team to develop and implement individualized safety plans and strategies for violence prevention and recovery.

A DAY IN THE LIFE – ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide intake, assessment, and direct support services to clients affected by family violence.
  • Develop and monitor individualized care plans focused on client safety, recovery, and empowerment.
  • Conduct risk and safety assessments, facilitating access to emergency shelters, counselling, and other essential services.
  • Act as an advocate for clients by connecting them with relevant services, including legal, medical, housing, and employment support.
  • Establish relationships with community partners to provide referrals and ensure coordinated service delivery.
  • Support clients in navigating systems to access benefits, financial assistance, and long-term housing options.
  • Facilitate workshops and outreach events focused on family violence prevention, healthy relationships, and community awareness.
  • Deliver culturally appropriate and trauma-informed presentations to promote understanding of family violence and support networks available to the community.
  • Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and other collaborative activities with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work with community leaders, law enforcement, and other agencies to develop strategies for violence prevention in the community.
  • Share relevant case updates while maintaining client confidentiality, ensuring an integrated support approach.
  • Maintain accurate case files, documentation, and records according to organizational and legal standards.
  • Prepare reports and updates on caseload, program outcomes, and client needs, contributing to ongoing evaluation and improvement of services.
  • Adhere to ethical and professional standards, safeguarding client confidentiality.
  • Work in conjunction with other departments of KAFS in the delivery of services.
  • Remains adaptable to shifting priorities and takes on emerging responsibilities as the role and organization grow.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS- WHAT YOU BRING TO KAFS:

  • Diploma in Human Services, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in family violence prevention, social services, crisis intervention, or related field.
  • Knowledge of local Indigenous communities, cultural sensitivity, and understanding of how family violence impacts Indigenous populations.
  • Strong understanding of the dynamics of family violence, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention techniques.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to meet people where they are at and support them shape their future.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of indigenous cultural practices that promote healing is strongly preferred, with the ability to recognize when to involve community knowledge keepers and/ or elders.
  • Ability to manage risk effectively and work within a highly active, and dynamic environment.
  • Possess strong computer skills using MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) software.
  • Proficient in diplomatic and efficient conflict mediation and resolution.
  • Ability to use advocacy and rapport skills to foster strong connections with diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical and interviewing skills to achieve desired results.
  • Diplomacy, tact, and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of people and information.
  • Must be flexible, adaptable, and able to work effectively in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to work within a team and a network to support individuals and families effectively.
  • Utilizing good judgement and problem-solving skills.

POSITION DETAILS & PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
