The Editorial Specialist is responsible for meticulously editing and proofreading content for all ACOG publications, including consumer books, patient education materials, the peer-reviewed journals, continuing medical education, coding resources, marketing and communications, and other internal- and external-facing ACOG documents and presentations. This role involves interacting with authors, editors, other member volunteers, and staff on the Publishing and Product Development team and across ACOG departments to ensure thorough content review. The Editorial Specialist must have strong editing skills, excellent communication abilities, and a keen eye for detail.

Note: This position is considered Hybrid and will need to commute to ACOG's office located in Washington, D.C.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support the publication, production, and post-publication processes for all ACOG publications, including consumer books, patient education materials, the peer-reviewed journals, continuing medical education, and other internal- and external-facing ACOG documents and presentations.
    • Interact with writers/authors, editors, and reviewers of manuscripts to resolve queries, clarify style points, and obtain additional information from appropriate resources as needed.
    • Review revised manuscripts and page proofs.
      • Ensure that requested revisions have been made and that the manuscript is consistent with editorial policy and style.
      • Ensure necessary permissions have been obtained for the use of material.
    • Check manuscripts for consistency between the abstract and text and fix any egregious errors. Review figures and tables redesigned by staff.
    • Support the Marketing and Communications team in dissemination of post-publication content to amplify reach and accessibility.
  • Support patient education digital publishing:
    • Prepare website content for publishing.
    • Review content in staging.
  • Complete other web-related tasks as assigned.
  • Support editorial staff and handle special projects as needed; provide backup to Managing Editor and Senior Director, Publishing and Product Development.
  • Administer all publications department’s group inboxes on a daily basis and handle all inquiries and requests as quickly as possible.
  • Support the Senior Editor in management of the ACOG Style Guide.
  • Use project management tools to track and adhere to project deadlines.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Attention to detail
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of medical publishing standards
  • Strong communication skills

Education and Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience proofreading and copyediting (of medical, scientific, or technical publications).
  • Familiarity with resources for medical nomenclature and terminology and style.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Ability to work independently and interactively with authors, editors, and staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree; preferred areas of concentration are English, communications, or the natural sciences.
Salary Range
$52,000$62,000 USD
