We are hiring students for five paid on-campus positions to work with EcoReps - Middlebury's student-led environmental program - during the 2026-2027 academic year. 

 

The EcoReps Program and its interns aim to connect incoming and current Middlebury students to the world of environmental consciousness and sustainability. The 7 interns work as a team to teach incoming students about important issues relating to sustainability and environmental justice, whilst simultaneously connecting them to resources on campus, from the moment they arrive.  

The group of interns includes 2 co-coordinators and 5 interns who work on sector-specific work: athletics, waste, communications, managing partnerships, and events. All interns will work on exposing students early to sustainability, in order to help students establish a lifelong relationship with sustainability. They will also focus on how to equitably involve all students, faculty, and staff in community-building, which includes helping to grow Middlebury’s reputation as a sustainability educator by fostering open dialogue, innovation, and creativity when it comes to big, real-time issues like climate change. 

This position is compensated at the Level B rate on the Midd student wage scale: $14.95 per hour. 

EcoReps Goals: 

  1. Empower Midd community members by helping gain a better understanding of sustainability and environmental issues and how to integrate solutions-oriented work to their lives. 
  1. Encourage inclusive community building that calls for equity, observance, and belonging. 
  1. Expand accessibility to environmental and sustainability resources at Midd. 
  1. Engage with the fourth pillar of Energy2028 to educate students about the importance of environmentally friendly practices as soon as they step on campus. 

 

APPLICATION INFO 

Application form closes on Sunday, July 19 at midnight. This is a hard deadline, unless there are extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated before Friday, July 10th. Applicants will be interviewed on a rolling basis and should expect to receive decisions by 5PM on Tuesday, July 21st. Decisions to accept will need to be made by Thursday, July 24th. Hired EcoReps will begin working in early fall (Monday 9/7/26), returning to campus early (can move in Sunday 9/6/26), to be involved with EcoReps onboarding and Orientation events for First-year students. There will also be an online onboarding meeting during summer.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  

We seek students who are creative, passionate team-players. Must be excited about sharing information about sustainability efforts around the community.   
 
EXPERIENCE:  

No Experience necessary; EcoReps will provide any background information and training needed to complete projects in a meaningful manner. All students are encouraged to apply. 

 

PARAMETERS: 

  • 3-10 hours a week, depending on position   
  • Move-in, at earliest, on Sunday, September 6, to begin on Monday, September 7, for EcoReps onboarding and First-year Orientation events. During this first week EcoReps will work 15-20 hours learning about the program, planning events, and going on field trips!  
  • Positions run Monday, September 7 – Friday, December 11. Positions will continue into Winter and Spring semesters and hired EcoReps will be expected to work during Feb Orientation, unless studying abroad or graduating.  
  • Paid Position, Level B-equivalent, paid biweekly through Oracle timesheets. 
  • EcoReps program consists of weekly team meetings, biweekly circle with ECommunity, planning engaging events with the student body, and posting educational content on Instagram!

*ALL ECOREPS will coordinate directly with Sustainability and Environmental Affairs staff to ensure projects, events, and communication are aligned with program goals 

 

Communications Intern (5-10 hours per week) 

Responsible for running Midd EcoReps Instagram account, marketing EcoReps program, creating semesterly newsletter/magazine. Research different sustainability topics and create social media posts based on what is learned. Use social media and posters to advertise upcoming events.  

  

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Designing outreach for events using graphic design platforms 
  • Running EcoReps Instagram account, create weekly outreach (ie. events, informational posts, reels etc), and promote both EcoRep and relevant non-EcoRep environmental events across campus  
  • Working with athletics, waste, partnership interns on creation of two Instagram posts/semester  
  • Creating at least one reel per month on anything relevant (a past event, educational content) 
  • Documenting events by taking photos/making reels  
  • Creating semesterly newsletter/magazine 

  

Events Coordination Intern (5-10 hours per week) 

Responsible for creating events and managing ECommunity volunteer base. Ensure events run smoothly and oversee ECommunity, updating with new members, attending ECommunity circle, and planning fun activities for each. Work directly with EcoReps coordinators to plan events, register them, and get high engagement.  

  

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Creating at least two volunteer opportunities for ECommunity base per semester 
  • Working with athletics, waste, partnership interns in creation of semesterly event 
  • Working with EcoReps coordinators to create other events, with at least 1 large event and 3 small events per semester (including events from other interns) 
  • Managing volunteer base and update it with new volunteers  
  • Scheduling of biweekly ECommunity Circle  

  

Athletics Liaison(3-5 hours per week) 

Note: This intern must be a student athlete at Middlebury. 

Varsity athletes make up about 27% of Middlebury’s student body and with club sports, that’s an even larger number! Greening athletics is essential in creating an overall culture of sustainability at Middlebury. The EcoReps athletics liaison will help educate and encourage participation of athletes in sustainability and climate initiatives on campus, explaining why it’s relevant and why they should get involved. 

  

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Coordinating with SAAC Sustainability Committee, Sustainability Liaisons, Green Panthers Program, and Athletics staff 
  • Planning events centered on greening athletics at Midd (ie. Perfect sort game days) 
  • Getting student athletes involved and excited about connections between athletics, sustainability, and climate work 
  • Helping to train each team’s Green Liaisons and coordinate sustainability initiatives with teams (ie. athletic shoe drives) 
  • Creating 1 event per semester, working with events coordination intern 
  • Creating 2 Instagram posts per semester, working with comms intern (not including promotion for events)  

  

Waste Intern (3-5 hours per week) 

Facilities Services works hard to manage waste at Middlebury. Waste Intern will learn everything about Midd’s relationship with waste! This includes updating and educating the Midd community on how to properly recycle and compost, reducing food waste, the Reuse Trailers, recycling center, and composting operation.  

  

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Working with Comms Intern to develop educational social media posts, email outreach, and posters about campus waste initiatives (including but not limited to: recycling, waste management, composting, reducing food waste, and Reuse Trailers). Minimum of 3 Instagram posts and 2 email outreach per semester. 
  • Creating 1 event per semester, working with event intern 
  • Liaising directly with Facilities (Recycling Center and Dining staff) and Sustainability and Environmental Affairs staff to ensure alignment of initiatives and outreach 

  

Partnerships Intern (3-5 hours per week) 

Every major is a climate/environmental major here on campus, but there is so much information that it can be hard to understand where to connect. The Partnerships Intern will learn more about various initiatives and disseminate information through on-campus partnerships and digital outreach to students and academic faculty in departments across campus. 

  

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Sharing relevant environmental opportunities, inroads and resources with students and faculty in various academic departments 
  • Demonstrating how students who are not yet involved with sustainability or are not ES majors can get involved in small ways, related to their specific majors 
  • Helping to identify new partnerships and collaborations across campus 
  • Creating 1 event per semester, working with events intern and academic departments 
  • Creating 3 Instagram posts working with comms intern (not including promotion for events)  

  

BACKGROUND: 
About Middlebury College Franklin Environmental Center at Hillcrest: FECH develops, implements, and supports sustainability initiatives that achieve environmental, social, and economic goals throughout the campus community, College operations, and the community at large. The office works in many different ways, from supporting independent student research projects to helping administrators and facilities staff with green campus infrastructure, such as the biomass gasification plant, as well as providing faculty workshops on integrating sustainability into the curriculum. 

Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.

Hour Limitations:

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
