Director of Tax
The Director of Tax is responsible for developing, leading, and executing the Company's global tax strategy, tax compliance, tax accounting, and tax planning activities. As Mineralys transitions from a clinical-stage biotechnology company to a commercial-stage public biopharmaceutical organization, this role will build scalable tax processes and infrastructure to support commercialization, domestic and international growth, and evolving regulatory requirements. The Director of Tax serves as the Company's internal tax expert and strategic advisor, partnering closely with Finance, Legal, Commercial, Supply Chain, Treasury, Human Resources, and external advisors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead all aspects of the Company's worldwide tax function, including income tax compliance, tax accounting, indirect taxes, transfer pricing, tax planning, and tax risk management.
- Own the quarterly and annual income tax provision under ASC 740, including deferred taxes, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, effective tax rate analysis, and financial statement disclosures.
- Manage federal, state, local, and international tax compliance through external advisors while maintaining ownership of all tax filings and deadlines.
- Develop the Company's commercial tax strategy supporting product launch, including indirect tax, state and local tax, inventory-related tax matters, distribution structures, and commercial contracting.
- Partner with Commercial, Market Access, Supply Chain, Legal, Treasury, and Accounting regarding tax implications of pricing, rebates, chargebacks, royalties, distribution arrangements, licensing agreements, and other commercial transactions.
- Lead transfer pricing strategy, documentation, and compliance supporting existing and future international operations.
- Oversee R&D tax credits, orphan drug incentives, and other available tax incentives.
- Support financing transactions, collaborations, licensing, business development, acquisitions, restructurings, and other strategic initiatives.
- Serve as the primary contact for tax audits and partner with external auditors on tax accounting matters.
- Develop scalable tax policies, SOX controls, documentation, and automation supporting a growing public company.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and advise executive management regarding business impacts.
Skills & Attributes:
- Deep technical knowledge of U.S. corporate taxation and ASC 740.
- Experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences industry.
- Experience supporting commercial product launches and related tax considerations.
- Strong understanding of transfer pricing, state and local tax, indirect tax, and international tax concepts.
- Strong knowledge of SOX and internal controls over tax processes.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax matters to non-tax stakeholders.
- Strategic mindset balanced with hands-on execution.
- High integrity and commitment to ethical business practices.
- Experience with ERP systems (ideally NetSuite) and tax technology.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation required.
- CPA required.
- Master of Taxation (MST), JD/LLM (Tax), or equivalent advanced education preferred.
- 10–15 years of progressive corporate tax experience with increasing leadership responsibility.
- Public company biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences experience strongly preferred.
- Big Four or large public accounting firm tax experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with ASC 740, SEC reporting, SOX compliance, and commercial-stage tax matters.
- Experience supporting transfer pricing, licensing transactions, financing activities, and international operations.
Travel
- This position requires up to 10% travel. Frequently travel is outside the local area and overnight.
This position is eligible for standard Company benefits including medical, dental, vision, time off and 401K, as well as participating in Mineralys incentive plans are contingent on achievement of personal and company performance. Actual compensation may vary from posted hiring range based on geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level.
US Salary Range: $195,000-$215,000
