About this Infrastructure Operations Engineer role at ElevateBio
ElevateBio is a technology-driven company powering the industry forward by helping partners realize the potential of their therapies from design to commercialization. We have integrated a differentiated set of technologies, end-to-end services, and industry-leading manufacturing expertise to develop advanced therapies faster and more efficiently.
The Role:
ElevateBio is looking for an Infrastructure Operations Engineer to join our Infrastructure Operations Center (IOC) as the right hand to our Principal Engineer of Cloud Systems & Networks. Our infrastructure — cloud, network, systems, storage, endpoints, and identity — is already established and running in production, supported by a network of trusted contractors and service providers. This role exists to operate that environment day-to-day, act as the internal subject-matter expert for our core platforms, and be the internal owner who keeps workstreams moving with our external partners. This is an IT operations role at heart, not a software engineering or DevOps position — we're looking for a seasoned IT / infrastructure operator who wants to grow with the team as IOC scales. The role is hybrid out of our Waltham, MA headquarters.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
If you've spent your career running real infrastructure - Windows Domain, VMware, storage, networking, and cloud — and you take pride in keeping production environments quiet and reliable, you'll feel at home here. You'll be trusted to own workstreams end-to-end, be the internal SME our teams reach for, and grow into a broader leadership seat as IOC expands.
Operate and maintain ElevateBio's infrastructure day-to-day — monitoring, patching, backups, access management, and change management keeping production environments quiet and predictable.
- Serve as the internal point-of-contact and administrator of infrastructure platforms: VMware, Windows Domain (Active Directory), PureStorage, and Netskope — with primary responsibility for their day-to-day health, configuration, and lifecycle.
- Operate our AWS environment day-to-day: routine changes in the console, monitoring, IAM and cost hygiene, and coordinating deeper cloud work with the Principal Engineer and our service provider.
- Coordinate closely with our contractors and service providers as the internal owner — scoping work, reviewing deliverables, holding partners to quality and timelines, and integrating their output back into our environment.
- Own network operations alongside our partners: firewall changes, VPN, DNS, VLANs, and site connectivity across our office and lab locations.
- Own the Active Directory stack and server-side systems administration — Windows and Linux servers, AD, DNS, DHCP, patching, access management, and secure configuration. You'll be involved in M365 and Entra ID where server and identity work intersect, though dedicated team members own endpoint imaging and endpoint management.
- Make sound tactical decisions inside live workstreams, unblocking the work in front of you and escalating only what truly needs the Principal Engineer's involvement.
- Bring AI into the daily flow of the work — using AI tools and copilots to move faster, and helping identify where AI can responsibly improve IOC operations.
- Maintain runbooks, documentation, and on-call practices so what we operate is repeatable and well-understood across internal and external collaborators.
- Grow with the team as IOC scales — taking deeper ownership of specific domains over time and helping shape standards and practices as we hire beyond this first seat.
Requirements:
5+ years of hands-on experience in an IT / infrastructure operations role — Senior Systems Administrator, Network Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, or IT Manager / Infrastructure Lead backgrounds are all strong fits.
- Strong Windows Server and Active Directory administration: domain design, GPO, DNS, DHCP, identity lifecycle, and day-to-day operations of a production Windows Domain environment.
- Hands-on experience operating VMware (vSphere/ESXi) in production — provisioning, snapshots, patching, capacity, and troubleshooting.
- Working experience with enterprise storage — PureStorage strongly preferred; comparable enterprise SAN/NAS experience (Pure, NetApp, Dell EMC, etc.) considered.
- Working knowledge of Netskope or a comparable SASE / SSE / secure web gateway platform (Zscaler, Palo Alto Prisma Access, etc.).
- Solid networking fundamentals you can apply day-to-day: routing, subnets, VLANs, firewalls, VPN, and DNS. Hands-on experience with Meraki, Palo Alto, and/or Cisco switching preferred.
- Working knowledge of AWS — comfortable operating a production AWS environment through the console (VPC, IAM, EC2, S3, Route 53, CloudWatch) and coordinating deeper cloud work with our Principal Engineer and service provider. Deep AWS/software-engineering background is not required.
- Solid Linux administration skills (RHEL/Ubuntu) alongside your Windows depth.
- Practical scripting ability in PowerShell and/or Bash; Python a plus.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with external contractors and service providers — scoping work, reviewing deliverables, and getting good outcomes through partners.
- A clear bias for action and sound judgment under uncertainty: comfortable making tactical calls in the middle of a workstream and explaining the reasoning afterward.
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI, and current, regular use of AI tools (chat assistants, IT copilots, agentic tools) as part of how you already work.
- Reliability mindset — you take pride in clean handoffs, good documentation, and quiet production environments.
Nice to have:
- Experience in a GxP, GMP, or otherwise regulated environment (21 CFR Part 11, computer system validation).
- Exposure to scientific computing, lab informatics, or biotech/pharma IT.
- Familiarity with AWS CDK or CloudFormation, or willingness to grow into it.
- Relevant certifications (Microsoft, VMware VCP, Cisco CCNA/CCNP, Palo Alto PCNSA, AWS SysOps).
The budgeted range for this position is $105,000 - $145,000. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law.
