ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

ONE is seeking a strategic communications leader to oversee the organization’s global communications, brand, and design and digital channels. As a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the President/CEO, this role will shape and execute integrated communications strategies that advance ONE’s mission, strengthen its global brand, and engage key audiences across internal and external channels.

The successful candidate will lead media relations, digital communications, executive messaging, internal communications, and major organizational campaigns. Working closely with regional teams and external partners, they will ensure alignment across markets, maintain consistent messaging and brand standards, and help maximize ONE’s advocacy impact and visibility.

In addition to leading the team, the CCO manage budgets and resources and help build a high-performing communications operation across a global organization. The role will also have direct interactions with Board members.

The ideal candidate is an experienced communications executive with strong leadership, strategic judgment, exceptional writing skills, and the ability to thrive in a complex, mission-driven environment.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

External Communications (50%)

  • Lead strategy and execution for:
    • Global social media channels (regional markets manage local channels)
    • Global website and digital content (regional markets manage local sites)
    • Global PR and media engagement (regional markets lead local PR)
    • Communications and events tied to major organizational moments
  • Function as spokesperson and media liaison for Tier 1 global outlets.
  • Partner with regional Executive Directors and market teams to develop cross-market campaigns and communications plans
  • Ensure consistency in messaging, tone, and brand across global communications channels
  • Coordinate closely with regional communications leads to share best practices and align on priorities

Internal Communications (30%)

  • Lead internal communications planning and messaging across the organization
  • Ensure alignment between internal and external communications
  • Draft and manage leadership and company-wide communications, including major announcements and organizational updates
  • Partner with HR to support employee communications and change management efforts
  • Help establish standards and processes for internal communications across teams and channels

Strategic Partnerships (10%)

  • Manage engagement with key stakeholder groups, including the Diaspora Creative Council and Global Faith Council
  • Support the development of strategic NGO and corporate partnerships (excluding fundraising partnerships) in collaboration with regional Executive Directors
  • Help identify opportunities to expand external visibility and collaboration

Operations & Team Leadership (10%)

  • Manage and mentor the global brand and communications team and coordinate with communications leads across markets
  • Own the team budget (~$1M, including personnel)
  • Maintain and oversee organizational brand guidelines and governance
  • Develop and track team’s OKRs
  • Support planning, prioritization, and workflow management across communications functions

 

WHAT YOU BRING TO ONE

  • 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public relations, digital media, or related fields (in-house or with agencies)
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated success managing and developing teams
  • Expertise in or with policy, advocacy, or international development organizations
  • Proven ability to navigate and influence within complex, global matrixed organizations
  • Strong writing, messaging, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Experience managing budgets, vendor relationships, and team/agency performance

LANGUAGE SKILLS Fluency in English required. Fluency in other languages such as French and German is a plus.

TRAVEL Travel up to 10% international and/or domestic.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Job is a hybrid position, with the expectation of being in the Washington DC office two to three days per week. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

COMPENSATION $200,000 - $240,000 per year

This salary range is based on compensation survey data for similar organizations and is used to set pay internally at ONE. Where a new hire’s salary falls within this range is based on a variety of factors, including the budget available for this position.
