Rail Response Equipment Operator (CDL Class A)

About the Position
We are seeking dependable Class A CDL drivers to join a specialized emergency response team that supports railroad operations. This position combines commercial driving, heavy equipment operation, and hands-on construction work to help restore rail service following derailments and other railroad incidents.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who enjoy working outdoors, operating heavy equipment, and being part of a team that responds to unique challenges. When not responding to emergency calls, employees assist with preventive maintenance, equipment inspections, safety training, and shop activities.
Work Schedule
Guaranteed 40 hours each week
Average workweek is approximately 60 hours, with opportunities for additional overtime
Must be available for emergency call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays
Travel is required based on project and emergency response needs
What You'll Do
Drive Class A commercial vehicles safely to and from job sites.
Complete required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
Transport heavy equipment, materials, and oversized loads while following DOT regulations.
Load, unload, position, and organize equipment before and after each assignment.
Assist with railroad recovery operations, load transfers, track repair, and construction projects.
Operate heavy equipment such as cranes, excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, grapple trucks, skid steers, front-end loaders, and similar machinery.
Assist with crane setup, rigging, chains, cables, winches, and lifting operations.
Use hydraulic equipment, welding tools, cutting torches, electrical tools, and standard hand tools.
Perform routine inspections and minor maintenance on trucks and equipment.
Report repair needs and document maintenance activities.
Help clean and organize equipment, vehicles, and work areas after each assignment.
Participate in daily safety meetings and follow all company safety procedures.
Support other departments as needed to meet operational requirements.
Qualifications
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a satisfactory driving record.
Experience performing physically demanding construction, industrial, or mechanical work.
Ability to safely operate equipment in active work environments.
Willingness to travel and respond to emergency service calls at any time.
Ability to complete required safety and qualification training.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with 3 or more years of experience operating heavy equipment are encouraged to apply. Experience with the following is especially valuable:
