Job Description Summary:

The Research Program Coordinator supports human clinical nutrition research studies and the educational mission of the laboratory. This position coordinates randomized controlled dietary intervention trials by managing research activities, participant interactions, regulatory requirements, and study documentation. The Research Program Coordinator works closely with the Principal Investigator to support high-quality research outcomes and contributes to data analysis, reporting, and dissemination efforts.

The position also supports laboratory organization, student training, and research operations while mentoring undergraduate research assistants and providing instruction in clinical research methods and laboratory techniques. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced research environment.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates clinical trial appointments, including participant recruitment, screening, scheduling, and informed consent processes.

  • Conducts participant assessments, including anthropometric, physiological, and neuroimaging evaluations.

  • Collects, processes, and organizes biological samples, including saliva and blood-derived specimens, in accordance with study protocols.

  • Oversees ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data collection and manages wearable biosensor deployment and data acquisition.

  • Maintains accurate study records, databases, and research documentation to support data integrity and compliance.

  • Supports clinical research protocols through quality assurance activities, data management, and coordination with research team members.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Physiology, Biology, Health Sciences, Psychology, Neuroscience, Public Health, or a related scientific field.

  • Experience in clinical, translational, or human participant research.

  • Experience following research protocols, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with established procedures.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with research participants, students, faculty, and research staff.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment with strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience coordinating or conducting human clinical trials, including participant recruitment, informed consent, study visits, data collection, and regulatory documentation.

  • Experience with nutrition intervention studies, dietary assessment methods, or lifestyle-based clinical research.

  • Experience collecting, processing, and analyzing biological specimens, including saliva, blood, or other biospecimens, and performing laboratory techniques such as ELISAs.

  • Experience conducting human participant assessments, including physiological, cardiovascular, cognitive, mental health, or neuroimaging assessments.

  • Experience with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), wearable biosensors, ecological momentary assessment (EMA), digital health technologies, or remote monitoring tools.

  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as SAS, R, SPSS, MATLAB, GraphPad Prism, or similar platforms.

  • Experience preparing research reports, conference abstracts, scientific presentations, manuscripts, or grant-related materials.

  • Experience training, mentoring, or supervising undergraduate students, research assistants, or other trainees in research settings.

  • Experience supporting instruction in higher education, including teaching assistant responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated interest in nutrition, cardiovascular health, neuroscience, behavioral health, or clinical translational research.

Compensation: $28.50/hour

This is a part-time, hourly position with a work schedule of up to 29 hours per week.

Conditions of Employment:

  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.

  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Job Duties


50% - Data Collection, Laboratory Procedures, and Research Activities

  • Conduct informed consent and clinical procedures during the study visits.

  • Ensure adherence to research protocols. Collect anthropometric, physiological, dietary, cognitive, and behavioral data.

  • Administer questionnaires and ecological momentary assessments (EMAs).

  • Deploy and monitor wearable biosensors and other study-related technologies. Conduct functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) neuroimaging, saliva collection and processing, ELISA-based analyses, and other laboratory techniques.

  • Organize, clean, enter, verify, and maintain research datasets. Assist with data quality control, statistical analyses, interpretation of findings, and preparation of research reports.

  • Maintain participant records and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.

30% - Clinical Research Coordination

  • Coordinate the organizational aspects of human clinical nutrition intervention studies. This includes but is not limited to recruitment efforts (posters, phone calls, emails, word of mouth), replying to email and phone queries, assessing entries from pre-screening questionnaires, scheduling appointments, organization of the food for the nutrition intervention, and communicating with study participants and undergraduate research assistants.

15% - Undergraduate Student Training and Educational Support

  • Train, mentor, and supervise undergraduate research assistants in clinical research procedures, participant interaction, laboratory techniques, data management, and research ethics.

  • Assist with onboarding and ongoing training of students working in the laboratory.

  • Support course instruction through teaching assistance activities and student engagement as needed.

5% - Laboratory and Research Program Management

  • Manage day-to-day laboratory operations including maintenance of research equipment, inventory tracking, ordering supplies, preparation of study materials, organization of research files, and coordination of laboratory activities.
