Job Description Summary

The Haliade Controls team is seeking a Lead Controls Engineer with demonstrated expertise in wind turbine real-time control systems and controls portfolio leadership. This global engineering role is responsible for leading controls releases, defining and prioritizing requirements, driving technical solutions, and ensuring successful implementation and validation of control features that meet safety, performance, reliability, and grid compliance objectives. The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders to manage release execution, resolve technical challenges, and drive alignment across programs. The engineer will also lead investigations of complex fleet issues, support root cause analyses and corrective actions, and contribute to serviceability, reliability, continuous improvement, and digital engineering initiatives that enhance product and fleet performance.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Own and drive the Controls Release Portfolio across turbine controls, pitch, and yaw controller platforms, partnering with demand management, flight boards, and cross-functional stakeholders to establish scope, priorities, risk mitigation plans, and release execution rigor.
  • Provide technical leadership for wind turbine controls systems throughout the product lifecycle, including requirements definition, architecture, design, development, validation, deployment, and ongoing fleet support.
  • Lead investigation and resolution of complex fleet controls issues, conducting root cause analyses (RCA), supporting ASRs, and implementing corrective and preventive actions to improve turbine reliability, availability, and serviceability.
  • Develop and evaluate advanced controls solutions utilizing control theory, mathematical modeling, software algorithms, sensors, and feedback control techniques to optimize turbine performance and operational efficiency.
  • Build cross-platform controls expertise by supporting multiple controller technologies and architectures, enabling organizational flexibility, knowledge transfer, and effective resource utilization across programs.
  • Drive future serviceability readiness initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance fleet maintainability, diagnostic capabilities, monitoring tools, and long-term product support strategies.
  • Champion continuous improvement through Lean principles, leading Kaizen initiatives, participating in Problem Solving Reports (PSRs), and implementing process improvements that enhance engineering quality, productivity, and issue resolution effectiveness.
  • Promote the application of AI-enabled and digital engineering practices to improve release management, engineering productivity, knowledge management, issue investigations, and data-driven decision making.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and team leader, coaching engineers, fostering consensus among stakeholders, strengthening engineering best practices, and supporting the development of technical capabilities across the team.
  • Ensure excellence in systems engineering execution and documentation, applying sound engineering methodologies while maintaining compliance with business processes, quality standards, product requirements, and documentation rigor to support successful product and fleet outcomes.

    Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited university.
    • Demonstrated experience in wind turbine or industrial controls systems, including controls design, modeling, algorithm development, validation, and fleet support activities.
    • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, lead controls release portfolios, drive issue resolution, and execute projects in a dynamic engineering environment.
    • Experience working across global and cross-functional teams, with strong collaboration, communication, stakeholder management, and technical leadership skills.
    • Knowledge of controls hardware, sensors, actuators, digital engineering tools, and continuous improvement methodologies, including Lean problem solving and process improvement.
    • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to conduct root cause investigations, develop corrective actions, produce clear technical documentation, and communicate effectively in English; willingness to travel occasionally as required.

    Desired Characteristics:

    • Strong experience in wind turbine controls engineering, including product development, fleet support, and release management.
    • Good understanding of wind turbine control systems, controller platforms, and the product lifecycle from NPI through fleet operations.
    • Experience with real-time control systems, controls modeling, simulation, and validation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, TwinCAT, SIL, and HIL.
    • Proven ability to investigate complex controls issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive reliability and availability improvements.
    • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills in a global engineering environment.
    • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and technical reviews.
    • Commitment to continuous improvement through Lean practices, digital tools, and AI-enabled engineering solutions.
    • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
