Purpose of the role: 

Takealot.com processes millions of transactions across multiple payment methods every month. Behind that scale sits a critical finance function that ensures every rand is accounted for, every payment method is reconciled, and cash is optimised at all times.

This is not a traditional accounting role. We're looking for a senior finance operator — someone with strong financial acumen and a builder's mindset. You'll own the end-to-end revenue accounting and cash management function for Takealot.com: designing and running reconciliation processes across payment methods, owning our banking relationships and cash position, and ensuring zero leakage in a high-volume, non-integrated systems environment.

You'll also be a critical partner to our Finance Operations teams — connecting the dots between financial processes and the real customer and seller queries that surface from them every day.

Key Responsibilities: 

Payment Reconciliation & Revenue Integrity

• Own end-to-end reconciliation of all Takealot.com payment methods (card, EFT, cash on delivery, vouchers, buy-now-pay-later, marketplace settlements, and any new payment rails as they are introduced)
• Design, build, and continuously improve reconciliation processes that are scalable, automated where possible, and exception-driven
• Ensure completeness and accuracy of revenue recognition across all payment channels 
• Investigate and resolve reconciling items timeously; build root cause resolution into process design so issues don't recur
• Partner with the Product, Technology, and Payments teams to ensure payment system changes are flagged early and accounted for correctly
• Maintain a clear audit trail for all payment flows from order through to bank settlement

Banking Ownership & Treasury Operations

• Act as the primary banking owner for Takealot.com — managing bank accounts, signatories, mandates, and bank relationships
• Prepare and maintain an accurate short-term cash flow forecast (daily/weekly), with rolling visibility into cash requirements
• Manage daily cash positioning across all Takealot bank accounts; ensure funds are available where needed and idle cash is optimised
• Identify opportunities for treasury optimisation — float management, intercompany funding, interest income, and bank fee reduction
• Liaise with the group treasury function on funding requirements, intercompany loans, and FX exposure where applicable
• Monitor and manage bank charges; ensure Takealot is on optimal fee structures relative to transaction volumes

Finance Operations Partnership & Customer Query Resolution

• Work closely with the Finance Operations teams to resolve payment-related customer and seller queries — including failed payments, unallocated receipts, duplicate charges, refund discrepancies, and settlement disputes
• Act as the finance escalation point for complex or unresolved payment queries that require GL-level investigation or bank intervention
• Ensure that customer-facing query resolution is supported by accurate, timely financial data — no customer should wait for an answer because the finance process is unclear
• Collaborate with Finance Ops, Customer Service, and Marketplace Operations to identify recurring query patterns and fix the upstream process or system causing them
• Build feedback loops between Finance Operations and the reconciliation function so that query trends inform process improvements and vice versa
• Define and maintain clear SLAs and escalation paths between the Revenue & Banking team and Finance Operations to ensure queries are resolved efficiently and consistently

Month-End & Year-End Close

• Execute all month-end journals related to revenue, cash, and banking — including accruals, prepayments, and payment method-specific entries
• Own the revenue and cash sections of the month-end close pack; ensure submissions are accurate and on time, every time
• Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations for all cash, bank, and revenue-related accounts
• Support the external audit process by owning the cash and revenue workstreams schedules, queries, and sign-off
• Maintain a clean general ledger across all entities under scope

Process Building & Systems

• Take full ownership of process documentation for the revenue, cash, and banking function — from transaction capture through to financial reporting
• Identify inefficiencies, manual workarounds, and single points of failure; design and implement structural fixes
• Work effectively across non-integrated systems — bridging gaps between payment platforms, ERP, and reporting tools through smart process design and exception management
• Drive automation and system improvement initiatives in partnership with Finance

Systems and Technology teams

• Ensure business continuity and adequate internal controls across all processes
• People & Stakeholder Management
• Set clear priorities and deliverable frameworks for the team to ensure accurate and timely output
• Collaborate closely with the broader Finance team (FP&A, Tax, Group Reporting) and cross-functional teams (Payments, Operations, Marketplace, Finance Operations)
• Communicate cash and revenue positions clearly to the Head of Finance and CFO, with proactive flagging of risks and anomalies
