Job Description:

The medical education learning specialist supports the academic success, professional development, and wellbeing of medical-engineering students by providing academic advising and learning support to all students. This will be accomplished by various means including providing group sessions on the science of learning, study skills,  test taking skills, time management, and more. They will also assist students in developing skills to become master adaptive learners. They are expected to provide one-on-one academic coaching and will meet with each student at least 1x per semester. They serve as accountability partner and main point of contact for students for those on academic remediation plans. The learning specialist will also collaborate with faculty and administrators to design and deliver evidence- based academic support programming.

This position requires an experienced professional with a background in health professions education, learning sciences, or related fields, who can integrate educational theory with the unique demands of the combined medical and engineering curricula at Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering.
 

Salary Range: $54,600.00 to $70,000.00; DOE

Essential Duties:

Student Support and Advising

  • Assess student learning needs and develop individualized learning and remediation plans

  • Provide individualized academic coaching and learning strategy support

  • Support students with time management, study skills, test- taking strategies (including NBME style and technical exams), increasing efficacy, and stress management

  • Promote culture of continuous improvement

 

Program and Curricular support

  • Design, develop, and implement workshops, learning modules and resources that promote effective study habits and lifelong learning skills

  • Create workshops for USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and Shelf exam preparation

  • Provide expertise in educational technology and learning assessment to enhance student engagement and success

  • Stay up to date with external resources to ensure students are using them to their fullest potential

  • Participate in curriculum committees, student progress meetings, and academic support planning initiatives

  • Develop peer tutoring program

Assessment and Data Management

  • Analyze academic performance data to identify trends, risk factors, and opportunities for targeted interventions and learning strategies

  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives within Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering

  • Prepare reports on student support outcomes and program effectiveness

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts

  • Initiate confidential correspondence on behalf of the project

  • Work both independently and within a complex structured team

  • Able to exercise judgment within generally defined practices & policies to determine appropriate action

  • Use office equipment

  • Schedule appointments and maintain calendar for project

  • Other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in education, learning sciences or related field

  • Prior experience working with medical students or graduate STEM students

  • Familiarity with USMLE exam formats

  • Experience developing academic support programs or workshops 

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience providing academic support, educational development, or learning strategy instruction in a higher education or health professions setting

  • Demonstrated understanding of the learning demands of medical and engineering students

  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions

  • Handle confidential and sensitive information responsibly

  • Refer students to other internal and external resources as appropriate

  • Excellent organizational skills, including problem solving and self-initiative

  • Experience using data-driven approaches to assess and improve learning outcomes

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse

  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work

  • Frequent physical demands may include stooping, bending, crawling under/around objects, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 20 pounds (light) 

  • Required to work (weekends, evenings)

  • Will be required to travel (for events, between campuses), rare nights or weekend work for school related events
