About this Technical Account Manager role at ICON
ICON is seeking a Technical Account Manager to support adoption and implementation of ICON’s technology for markets within the state of Texas. This role will build relationships with in-market building officials, engineers, and inspectors that drive regulatory acceptance, adoption, and market expansion of ICON's construction technology in the private sector. Reporting to the Director of Building Regulatory Affairs and working closely with ICON’s customer-facing teams, this role is the technically fluent representative of ICON to local building departments and design professionals, focused on supporting ICON’s customers. This is a relationship- and market-development role with a working technical foundation, not a deep engineering role. This role is based our of our Headquarters in Austin, TX.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Sustain regulatory acceptance and go-to-market standing across the established markets in the assigned market area, keeping approvals current and jurisdictional requirements met as active projects proceed.
- Open new markets within the assigned area by mapping acceptance and approval pathways and jurisdictional requirements in advance of active projects, surfacing AHJ-specific risks early enough to inform market-selection and go-to-market decisions.
- Provide support to customers and sales teams to gain the regulatory and permitting approvals necessary to build with ICON’s technology across the private residential, commercial, and industrial construction sectors.
- Build, own, and maintain the building official, regulatory, and market design-professional relationships that facilitate technology acceptance and accelerate market adoption, including travel regularly throughout the assigned state and market and to Austin, TX headquarters.
- Deliver presentations and educational technical materials to customers, building officials, plan reviewers, design professionals, and industry stakeholders to promote awareness and adoption of ICON's technology and its regulatory pathways.
- Provide technical sales support to ICON’s Sales and Business Development teams throughout the sales cycle, such as customer presentations, technical sales calls, and proposal input, positioning ICON's technology and regulatory readiness.
- Engage with customer-facing teams early in the sales pipeline to assess proposed project scope and jurisdiction, surface regulatory and permitting considerations before commitments are made, and shape the approach to smooth the path through acceptance, permitting, and construction.
- Serve as the first-line building regulatory contact and support for customers, local jurisdictions, and project teams, answering routine code and product questions, drawing on the appropriate ICON subject matter experts for technical depth, and escalating complex building regulatory approval challenges to the Director.
- Track and stay up-to-date on regional code and approval considerations across jurisdictions in the market and share regular updates with stakeholders to inform market expansion and product strategy.
- Provide regular updates to stakeholders and department leadership on adoption progress, relationships, emerging risks, and blockers in assigned markets.
- Provide feedback to ICON’s technology teams on product and services opportunities to improve adoption and ease regulatory approvals.
- Remain current and up-to-date with ICON’s product and service offerings within the market and effectively represent them to customers and building officials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, business, marketing, engineering, architecture, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- 6+ years in client-facing roles in construction, building products, or AEC, such as technical sales, business development, market development, customer-facing technical support, or a design/engineering role with direct client and project-team responsibility, with the technical aptitude to learn and represent complex product performance and the relationship command to build and grow customer accounts.
- Demonstrated success opening markets and building relationships with customers and external stakeholders
- Working familiarity with building codes and the local approval process (e.g., IBC, IRC, AHJ plan review) sufficient to speak credibly with building officials and design professionals and to answer routine questions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven public speaking skills across diverse audiences including customers, regulatory officials, design professionals, and internal stakeholders.
- Exceptional relationship-building and networking abilities with demonstrated success establishing trust and credibility with external stakeholders in professional and regulatory environments or similar.
- Self-motivated and highly organized with ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize competing demands, and adapt to evolving project scopes and requirements.
- Willingness to travel regularly throughout the assigned state and market and to Austin, TX headquarters.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate a motor vehicle for site visits and meetings.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Direct experience in technical sales or business development of building products, construction systems, or other engineered/technical products, with a track record of owning the customer relationship from technical evaluation through close.
- Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience selling or promoting a technical or building product to AHJs, building officials, or design professionals
- Established relationships with building departments, code officials, or design professionals in the target market)
- Familiarity with 3D printing, additive manufacturing, or advanced construction methods
- A construction, building-technology, or design background providing a stronger technical foundation
- Deep experience with building codes and standards (IBC, IRC, ACI, ASCE)
- Experience in design-build, fast-track, or integrated project delivery environments
