The Role:
Position Summary:
Public Health Ontario provides scientific and technical advice and support to clients working in government, public health, health care, and related sectors.
We are looking for a student to join our Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) team. The student role is an opportunity to contribute to priority initiatives in environmental health, applying critical thinking, knowledge synthesis, written communication, and analytical skills.
Duration: until March 31, 2027
Hours of work: Up to 29 hours (or 4 days) per week
Key Responsibilities-
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental and Occupational Health, you will perform the following responsibilities:
- Support day-to-day operational work related to health hazards, safe water, and food safety
- Assist with literature reviews by creating and running search strategies for web-based search tools, selecting relevant documents by reviewing abstracts for inclusion/exclusion criteria, and drafting summary annotations of key documents
- Create and maintain reference management files (e.g., Zotero) for peer-reviewed and grey literature required for literature reviews
- Performs basic statistical analysis including descriptive analyses
- Manages documents and processes on SharePoint to ensure systems are set up to orderly archive and access relevant materials and documents.
- Contribute to the development of emails, slides, briefings, and/or other products to meet the needs of target audiences.
- Contribute to the development of project management tools such as process maps to outline processes and Gantt charts.
- Apply critical thinking skills in working with internal and/or external partners to understand current processes, identify opportunities, and outline next steps for priority initiatives.
- Become familiar with PHO’s policies, procedures, and processes (e.g., Privacy, Data & Digital) and support activities related to these areas.
- Support planning and coordination of meetings, including secretariat support, meeting logistics, documentation, and provincial-local initiatives, as needed.
- Work collaboratively with members of the EOH team, colleagues, and public health partners to produce high quality products and deliverables.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills-
- Ability to work efficiently under conditions of multiple deadlines and changing priorities with meticulous attention to detail.
- Office computer and data management skills with proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with SharePoint in order to manage documents and processes on SharePoint.
- Strong written communication skills, with ability to apply these skills to different products and audiences.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills, including ability to use project management tools (e.g., creating or updating Gantt charts).
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
- Subject matter expertise in the areas of environmental and/or public health is an asset.
Education and Experience-
- Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a post-secondary program which focuses on Public Health, Health Sciences, Toxicology, or Environmental Sciences.
- Strong familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience with SharePoint website management is an asset.
