Certified Secondary Dog Handler Specialist

Appointment Type: Seasonal Full Time

Overview:

This is a non-supervisory position that will provide a Level B avalanche rescue certified K9 team on the mountain as a secondary handler. This position provides the resort with specialized K9’s that perform avalanche rescue. This position is responsible for the care and transport of the K9 while at work. The K9 Specialist reports directly to the Director of Patrol, Ski Patrol Manager, and Avalanche Mitigation Manager. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by the Solitude Ski Patrol Union.

Key requirements:

• Must be employed as a Solitude Mountain Patroller
• The ability and capacity to raise and train an avalanche rescue K9 in coordination with the primary handler
• Ability to run the dog within the resort to level B WBR standard
• Schedule coordinated with primary handler (similar days) 
• Ski Patrol Level 1 or above

Duties:

• Maintain a Level B certification based on Wasatch Backcountry Rescue (WBR) requirements with steady progress toward Level A certification
• Properly document all K9 training as secondary handler
• Moving dog around the mountain when primary handler is not available or as directed
• Perform minimum of one drill per week
• Assist setting up dog training drills in coordination with primary dog handler and Dog Coordinator Specialist
• Regular attendance for trainings to meet WBR standards is strongly recommended
