Position Overview

The Senior Underwriter – Commercial Property is responsible for the successful underwriting and management of a diverse portfolio of mid to large-size commercial property risks. This role involves evaluating complex risks, maintaining broker relationships, negotiating terms and pricing, and supporting the profitable growth of the portfolio in line with company objectives and Canadian regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial property business, analyzing exposures, coverage, and risk acceptability within authority levels.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and external partners to drive business development.
  • Perform risk assessments, pricing analysis, and coverage recommendations in compliance with Starr underwriting guidelines and Canadian insurance laws, including P&C regulatory requirements.
  • Present and negotiate quotations, communicate underwriting decisions, and document all correspondence in line with company policies.
  • Conduct site visits/inspections as required to assess physical risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with claims, loss control, and actuarial teams to provide comprehensive client solutions.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
  • Review policy documents and endorsements to ensure accuracy and compliance with legal and company requirements.
  • Participate in portfolio management, including business planning, production monitoring, and reporting.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Canadian property insurance market trends, emerging risks, and regulatory changes.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • University degree or college diploma in business, insurance, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ progressive experience in Commercial Property underwriting (mid to large accounts) within the Canadian market.
  • Completion of CIP designation required; FCIP or CRM considered assets.

Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian P&C insurance industry standards, regulatory requirements, and commercial property wordings.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proven relationship building and business development skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; bilingual in French is considered a strong asset.
  • Solid organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • The salary range for this position is between $130,000.00 CAD - $150,000.00 CAD
