COMPANY PROFILE

CodeAI is an education innovation nonprofit dedicated to the vision that every student in every school has the opportunity to learn about artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science (CS) as part of their core K-12 education. We increase participation in AI+CS education by reaching students of all backgrounds where they are — at their skill level, in their schools, and in ways that inspire them to keep learning, with a focus on increasing participation by young women and students from other underrepresented groups. The leading provider of K-12 AI+CS education curriculum across the globe, CodeAI also organizes the annual Hour of AI campaign, building on the legacy of the Hour of Code, which has engaged more than 15% of all students in the world!

A unifying approach in a divided world

CodeAI's global role in the K-12 computer science movement is only possible because we use a unifying approach across diverse and often divided stakeholders. At a time of increasing polarization, the idea of increasing opportunity for students unites people from across the political spectrum. CodeAI's team members, students, teachers, and supporters have diverse and diverging view points, and they are all welcome in our mission. Read more.

JOB SUMMARY

As our Sr. Designer & Art Director, you’ll bring the CodeAI brand to life through design, visual direction, and creative ideas across every channel we use. Reporting to the Executive Producer of Creative and Delivery, you’ll lead the visual side of how our brand shows up everywhere and partner with our copywriter on integrated campaigns of every size.

This role leans toward design. You’ll concept alongside your copywriter, direct the look of the work, and design much of it yourself, from video and social to out of home, experiential, and everyday channel assets. We have an established brand and campaigns already in market, and finding fresh ways to express them is at the heart of this job.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role, you will own the visual direction of the CodeAI brand and design much of the work that carries it.

Visual Direction & Design

  • Set the visual direction for campaigns and channel work, and design key pieces yourself, from key visuals to social, email, web, and paid assets.
  • Bring strong typography, layout, composition, and color to every deliverable, and carry the work through to final, production-ready files.
  • Design for motion and platform-native formats, including vertical video and social-first content.
  • Build accessible work that meets WCAG standards across digital channels.
  • Use AI tools in your design workflow and help the team keep pushing how we use them.

Concepting & Art Direction

  • Concept integrated campaigns with your copywriter partner from first brief to final delivery, and translate each idea into a visual system that works across channels.
  • Bring forward new ideas that engage our audiences and solve brand challenges, often before a brief asks for them.
  • Art direct photo and video shoots from shot list through post, while production partners handle logistics and vendors.
  • Direct contract designers and creatives when they’re brought on, with clear feedback that raises the quality of the work.

Brand Stewardship

  • Own the visual elements of the CodeAI brand guidelines and evolve them over time, with final approval resting with the Executive Producer.
  • Be the go-to resource for visual brand questions, helping teams across CodeAI and external partners apply the guidelines well.
  • Present your work to leadership and stakeholders with clear strategic reasoning, using audience insights and performance data to sharpen it.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

We seek candidates who have:

  • 8 to 10 years in graphic design and art direction, including time at a senior level.
  • A portfolio showing both hands-on design craft and integrated campaign work, with your specific role noted on each project.
  • Expert typography, layout, and composition skills, with the ability to flex across visual styles.
  • Experience concepting with copywriters, with produced campaign work to show for it.
  • Experience art directing photo or video shoots through post.
  • Experience building or evolving brand guidelines and helping other teams apply them.
  • Experience directing the work of other creatives.
  • Experience using AI tools in a creative workflow.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma.

We prefer candidates who also have:

  • Agency or design studio experience.
  • Experience with education, nonprofit, or mission-driven brands.
  • Motion design or video editing skills.

In addition, candidates must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Work within the continental United States
  • Pass a pre-employment background check
  • Be willing to travel a minimum of two times per year for team events
