The overall focus of the Charles lab is to decrease the global burden of mucosal and enteric infections affecting resource-poor and marginalized populations. More specifically, work in the lab is focused on furthering our understanding of host-pathogen and immune responses during human infection by V. cholerae (the cause of cholera) and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Paratyphi A (the primary cause of enteric fever) and to identify immunogenic antigens or molecular signatures for vaccine and diagnostic assay development. Research in the lab utilizes human patient samples to perform a variety of immunological, functional, and genome-scale assays to address 1) fundamental questions about protective immunity during human infection with S.
