Hiring Unit:

Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences

Position summary:

The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar in atmospheric moist convection. The objective is to develop reduced but realistic models of cumulus life cycles that may be applied toward cumulus parameterization and/or machine-learning algorithms for predicting short-term convective hazards. The model development will be aided by synthesizing observational data and high-resolution numerical simulations to gain new conceptual insights on cloud life cycles. Potential observational sources include data from field campaigns, long-term observational deployments, and operational satellite and radar. The numerical experiments will include large-eddy simulations over large domains, where the clouds and their interactions with mesoscale circulations are simultaneously resolved. The candidate will join a dynamic research group focused on convective-scale processes and their representation in atmospheric prediction models. The initial appointment is for a term of one year but may be extended upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

Job description:

  • Using large-eddy simulations and observations for guidance, build a quantitative conceptual understanding of the critical factors controlling cumulus life cycles
  • Develop and critically evaluate new physical model(s) for cumulus life cycles based on the above findings
  • Publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals

Qualifying Skills:

  • Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric science, or closely related field
  • Experience in the study of clouds and cumulus convection
  • Strong conceptual understanding of cloud microphysical and turbulent processes
  • Expertise in the use of modern scientific visualization software (Python, Matlab, etc.)
  • Demonstration of scientific productivity, as evidenced by journal articles and other published work
  • Demonstration of scientific communication, primarily through conference and workshop presentations

Application materials

  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • Contact information for three professional references

Postdocs at McGill must remain within 5 years of being awarded their Ph.D. throughout their appointment.
