We’re looking for an experienced Platform Lead to guide a high-performing team and maximise the value of our Master Data Hub, enabling trusted data assets, reporting, analytics and emerging AI capabilities.

This is a full time, permanent opportunity based in either Auckland or Wellington. It is a hybrid role with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly. This role will report to the Head of Data - Corporate & Risk and has people leadership accountability for five colleagues.  

What are 5 day to day tasks the person in this role will complete? 

  • Define and communicate a clear data platform vision, strategy and roadmap aligned with BNZ priorities, data strategy and customer needs. 
  • Lead, support and develop a team of engineers and technical specialists, creating a culture of trust, collaboration and accountability. 
  • Own and prioritise the backlog, balancing customer value, business impact, data asset enablement, risk, operational hygiene and available resources. 
  • Support the delivery of secure, trusted and reusable data assets by embedding appropriate standards for data quality, metadata, lineage, classification, access and lifecycle management. 
  • Use customer insights, data and performance metrics to guide decisions and continuously improve platform reliability, usability, cost efficiency and value. 
  • Own service performance, stability and continuous improvement, including proactive monitoring, incident response, post-incident reviews and actions that improve resilience, data availability and recoverability.

What will the successful candidate be working on? 

The successful candidate will shape and deliver the data lifecycle roadmap, from ingestion and transformation through to governed data assets, reporting, analytics and AI use cases. You’ll strengthen service ownership, reliability and performance, while partnering with data teams and stakeholders to ensure data is secure, discoverable, well-governed and fit for purpose. The role will also support modern engineering practices, reusable delivery patterns, effective data controls and BNZ’s evolving data capability.

This role brings together people leadership, data strategy and delivery. You’ll help shape the technology foundations that enable trusted data assets, analytics and future AI capability, while connecting platform teams, data practitioners and business customers. 

What attributes will this person display to be successful in this role? 

We’re looking for an inclusive, outcome-focused leader who can connect data strategy, technical delivery and customer value. You’ll bring: 

  • Platform Lead, Product Owner or similar experience, ideally across data platforms, data engineering or enterprise technology services. 
  • Proven people leadership across recruitment, onboarding, development, performance, engagement and retention. 
  • Sound knowledge of modern data and engineering practices, including ingestion, transformation, orchestration, cloud data services and DevOps. 
  • Knowledge of trusted data assets and controls, including quality, metadata, lineage, classification, security, access and lifecycle management. 
  • Ability to use data, KPIs, platform health and customer insights to guide prioritisation and investment. 
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication across data, technology, governance and non-technical audiences. 
  • Experience with modern data technologies and cloud platforms would help, such as Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, Airflow or similar. 
  • Adaptability and sound judgement in a fast-paced, evolving environment. 
  • Experience in banking or financial services, and a relevant business or technology qualification, would be beneficial.
