About this Gaming Architect role at Betsson Group
About Betsson Group
At Betsson, you’ll join a global engineering organisation building high‑scale, real‑time platforms across 40+ digital brands. After more than 60 years in the industry, our products handle large volumes of user activity and complex regulatory requirements — making performance, reliability and modern cloud‑native engineering essential to everything we do. You’ll collaborate with colleagues from 75+ nationalities in a culture built on learning, ownership and teamwork.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Gaming Architect to define and govern the architecture of scalable, resilient, and secure backend services for our gaming platform. The role will translate product, operational, and regulatory requirements into robust technical designs across game management, gameplay, provider integrations, player and wallet interactions, promotions, responsible gaming, and regulatory capabilities. The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering expertise with systems thinking, cloud-native architecture experience, and a practical understanding of high-volume online gaming environments. You will collaborate with the rest of the architecture department, product, engineering, infrastructure, security, data, compliance, and external partners to guide implementation and the long-term evolution of the platform.
What You’ll Work On
Backend Architecture and Technical Direction:
- Define and evolve the target architecture for gaming backend services, ensuring alignment with business strategy, domain boundaries, and the wider platform landscape.
- Translate functional and non-functional requirements into clear solution designs, integration contracts, architecture decisions, and technical roadmaps.
- Promote modular, loosely coupled, and reusable services that support independent delivery and future B2C or B2B integration scenarios.
Gaming Domain Design:
- Design solutions across game management, gameplay, player and wallet interactions, provider integration, promotions, responsible gaming, regulatory functions, and operational tooling.
- Model domain capabilities, service boundaries, ownership, and event flows using domain-driven design and product-oriented architecture principles.
- Ensure backend designs support accurate session handling, game launch and lifecycle flows, transactional integrity, reconciliation, and auditable gaming outcomes.
Distributed Systems and Integration:
- Architect APIs, asynchronous events, and real-time messaging flows between gaming services, internal platform domains, data products, and external game providers.
- Define reliable integration patterns for REST, event streaming, queues, webhooks, and provider-specific protocols, including versioning, idempotency, retries, timeouts, and failure handling.
- Drive the standardisation of contracts and integration frameworks to reduce coupling and accelerate onboarding of new providers, brands, and markets.
Scalability, Reliability, and Performance:
- Design for high availability, low latency, horizontal scalability, fault isolation, graceful degradation, disaster recovery, and predictable performance under peak gaming loads.
- Define service-level objectives and guide capacity planning, caching, data-store selection, resilience testing, and performance optimisation.
- Ensure solutions include effective observability through metrics, logs, distributed tracing, alerting, and operational dashboards.
Security, Compliance, and Responsible Gaming:
- Embed security by design, including strong authentication and authorisation, least-privilege access, encryption, secrets management, network segmentation, and secure software supply-chain practices.
- Work with security, legal, and compliance stakeholders to ensure architecture supports jurisdiction-specific gaming controls, responsible gaming measures, auditability, data protection, and regulatory reporting obligations.
- Maintain clear separation of regulated components and data where required, while supporting traceability and evidencing for audits and technical submissions.
Technical Governance and Delivery Enablement:
- Lead architecture reviews, document decisions and trade-offs, and maintain reference patterns, standards, and reusable guidance for engineering teams.
- Partner with technical leads and developers throughout delivery, providing hands-on guidance, reviewing critical designs, and validating that implementations meet architectural intent.
- Identify and prioritise technical debt, modernisation opportunities, and platform simplification initiatives that improve stability and time to market.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with product managers, engineering teams, architects, operations, data, infrastructure, security, compliance, and external suppliers to create shared understanding and alignment.
- Explain complex technical concepts, risks, options, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Mentor technical leads and engineers, encourage sound architectural thinking, and foster continuous improvement across the gaming domain.
What we are looking for
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
- Several years of senior software engineering experience, including responsibility for designing complex backend or distributed systems.
- Strong knowledge of microservices, domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, API design, and integration patterns.
- Hands-on experience with backend technologies such as .NET, Java, or an equivalent modern stack, together with SQL and NoSQL data stores.
- Experience with messaging and event-streaming technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ, and with container platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience designing cloud-based architectures; practical knowledge of AWS or an equivalent cloud platform is highly desirable.
- Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure automation, production operations, incident analysis, and modern DevSecOps practices.
- Relevant experience in online gaming or another high-volume, transactional, regulated digital industry; familiarity with game-provider, player-account, wallet, responsible-gaming, or regulatory integrations is an advantage.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, facilitation, and communication skills, with the ability to influence without direct authority.
If you are a pragmatic and influential architect with deep backend engineering expertise and a passion for building secure, resilient, and scalable gaming platforms, we invite you to apply and help shape the future of our gaming technology.
