Job Description:

Director, Domain Enterprise Architect, Technology Modernization and Cloudification

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Architecture, Core Platforms, the Director, Domain Enterprise Architect, Technology Modernization and Cloudification leads the architecture for modernizing and migrating Sun Life’s on-premises technology estate to the cloud.

The Director defines the domain strategy, future-state architecture, standards, reference architectures, and transition roadmaps. The scope includes OpenShift, virtualization, servers, operating systems, databases, storage technologies, and related infrastructure services.

Working with Technology Executives, other Enterprise Architects, engineering leaders, cybersecurity, cloud engineering, AI platform teams, and application development, the Director aligns cloud migration with enterprise priorities, regulatory obligations, operational requirements, and cost outcomes. The role also leads AI-enabled automation projects that accelerate modernization.

What will you do?

·         Lead AI-enabled automation projects that accelerate technology discovery, estate analysis, dependency mapping, migration planning, remediation, testing, and architecture documentation.

·         Define and maintain the domain architecture strategy, future-state architectures, principles, standards, reference architectures, and decision boundaries.

·         Develop and maintain an integrated roadmap for migrating on-premises container, virtualization, server, operating system, database, storage, and related infrastructure technologies to cloud services.

·         Maintain architecture documentation covering the existing technology estate, target cloud architectures, transition plans, dependencies, architecture decisions, lifecycle risks, technical debt, and retirement plans.

·         Collaborate with Technology Executives to communicate architecture direction, options, trade-offs, dependencies, investment considerations, risks, and modernization outcomes, and align cloud migration roadmaps with enterprise and operational priorities.

·         Assess the current-state technology estate to identify cloud migration opportunities, unsupported technologies, security vulnerabilities, platform fragmentation, technical debt, lifecycle exposure, resilience gaps, and operational risks.

·         Define target cloud architectures, workload placement direction, transition states, migration sequencing, dependencies, and retirement plans that support the progressive reduction of the on-premises technology estate.

·         Establish architecture patterns and decision frameworks for rehosting, re-platforming, refactoring, consolidating, containerizing, replacing, retiring, or temporarily retaining technologies.

·         Provide subject-matter expertise and architectural leadership across cloud infrastructure and platform services, Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, virtualization, servers, operating systems, enterprise databases, storage technologies, and related infrastructure services.

·         Identify barriers to cloud migration and define the application, data, security, privacy, network, identity, integration, operational, and platform changes required to address them.

·         Evaluate relevant cloud capabilities, managed services, and vendor offerings to inform future-state architecture, technology standards, migration approaches, and investment recommendations, and collaborate with Enterprise Architects, Business Group Architects, Solution Architects, and engineering leaders to align migration decisions and cross-domain dependencies.

·         Lead domain architecture governance and ensure architecture decisions are traceable, implementable, and aligned with security, resilience, operational, financial, regulatory, and compliance requirements.

What you'll need to succeed?

·         Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline. A master’s degree is preferred.

·         Enterprise architecture credentials such as TOGAF, IASA CITA, or an equivalent architecture certification are preferred.

·         Advanced cloud architecture certification is strongly preferred.

·         Relevant infrastructure, container, database, virtualization, storage, networking, automation, or security certifications are considered assets.

·         10 or more years of progressive architecture experience, including enterprise, domain, cloud, infrastructure, platform, or cross-technology responsibility.

·         Extensive experience designing enterprise cloud architectures and leading the architectural migration of large-scale on-premises technology estates to cloud infrastructure, managed services, and cloud-native capabilities.

·         Demonstrated experience defining cloud strategies, future-state architectures, transition roadmaps, workload placement direction, architecture standards, modernization patterns, and technology retirement plans.

·         Broad architecture experience across cloud services, Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, virtualization, servers, operating systems, enterprise databases, storage, networking, identity, security, resilience, observability, and automation.

·         Proven ability to collaborate with Technology Executives and influence senior technology leaders through clear analysis, architecture options, trade-offs, risks, and recommendations.

·         Excellent mastery of cloud architecture, managed platform services, cloud-native patterns, migration architectures, hybrid transition states, and enterprise cloud operating considerations.

·         Ability to translate enterprise priorities, executive direction, regulatory obligations, operational risks, and technology constraints into actionable modernization and cloudification direction.

·         Ability to assess complex technology estates and determine the appropriate cloud destination, service model, migration approach, sequencing, transition architecture, and retirement path.

·         Excellent executive communication, facilitation, negotiation, and influence, with the ability to provide implementable architecture direction without assuming engineering, delivery, or operational ownership.

·         A clear and actionable Technology Modernization and Cloudification strategy and roadmap covering on-premises containers, virtualization, servers, operating systems, databases, storage technologies, and their target cloud services.

·         Measurable migration of on-premises technologies and workloads to approved cloud services, supported by defined target architectures, transition states, migration sequencing, and retirement plans.

·         Measurable acceleration and reduced manual effort in technology discovery, migration planning, remediation, and documentation through AI-enabled automation.

What’s in it for you?

·         A competitive salary and bonus program, based on market scale

·         A flexible group insurance program starting on your first day of work to meet your needs and those of your family.

·         Time off that allows you to focus on the moments that matter most. 20 vacation days per year.

·         Our Share Ownership Program gives you the opportunity to invest in Sun Life while benefiting from employer matching contributions.

·         We are proud to be included in Great Place to Work's 2026 list of Canada's Best Workplaces.

·         Working together, sharing common values, and encouraging growth & achievement.
