About this role in the team:
We are seeking an experienced Deputy MLRO (DMLRO) to join our Financial Crime team in Malta.
The DMLRO will support the MLRO in maintaining, executing, and overseeing the firm’s Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Financing of Terrorism, Counter-Proliferation Financing, and Sanctions frameworks.
Key Areas of Responsibilities:
- Financial Crime Framework: Ensure the firm’s operational AML/CFT controls fully comply with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the PMLFTR, and the FIAU Implementing Procedures Part I and Part II.
- Business Risk Assessment: Assist the MLRO in conducting the bi-annual Business Risk Assessment (BRA) and maintaining the firm's Financial Crime Risk Register.
- Regulatory Reporting: Assist in gathering quantitative and qualitative financial crime data for the submission of regulatory reporting including the FIAU Risk Evaluation Questionnaire (REQ).
- New Product Reviews: Provide SME input into the new product development and assessment process.
- Oversight: Support periodic quality assurance checks on relevant financial crime controls.
- Internal SAR Evaluation: Review, analyze, and investigate internal Suspicious Activity Reports (iSARs) escalated by operational teams and the wider business.
- FIAU Reporting: Assist the MLRO in drafting, logging, and submitting official Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs), Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), and Targeted Financial Sanctions disclosures to the Maltese Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU).
- Law Enforcement & RFI Liaison: Serve as a point of contact for requests for information (RFIs), court orders, and freeze notices issued by the FIAU, the Malta Police Force (Financial Crime Investigation Department - FCID), and international FIUs.
- High-Risk File Sign-Off: Conduct secondary reviews and provide compliance recommendations on Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) cases for complex legal entities, Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs), high-net-worth individuals, and high-risk commercial verticals.
What we need from you:
- Industry Experience: Direct, hands-on AML/CFT experience within a Maltese regulated entity (Financial Institution, EMI, Bank, VFA/CASP, or Gaming operator).
- Maltese Regulatory Knowledge: Deep operational familiarity with the Maltese legal and supervisory framework, specifically the PMLA, PMLFTR, FIAU Implementing Procedures (Part I and Part II), Sanctions Monitoring Board (SMB) notices, and MFSA regulatory expectations.
- Ideally, you will have an internationally recognised financial crime qualification such as the ICA or ACAMS.
