The Opportunity:
As a senior cybersecurity engineer supporting the Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF‑401), you will contribute to our team’s mission to strengthen the Department of Defense’s counterunmanned aircraft systems (CUAS) enterprise and safeguard warfighters, critical infrastructure, and the homeland. Our role is to synchronize CUAS efforts across the defense and interagency community by integrating threat intelligence, emerging technologies, testing, acquisition, and training to ensure timely and effective defense against small UAS threats. By enhancing shared awareness of friendly and adversarial drone capabilities, identifying operational gaps, and accelerating the delivery of validated counterdrone solutions, JIATF‑401 empowers commanders and mission partners with the knowledge, tools, and support needed to detect, track, and defeat hostile drones across diverse operational environments.
The person in this role will serve as JIATF 401’s senior Cybersecurity Engineer and trusted technical advisor for complex cybersecurity and information technology matters across mission, enterprise, cloud, and vendor-provided environments. This individual must be capable of making an immediate impact in a fast-paced Joint environment with senior Department of War, interagency, and defense industrial base stakeholders.

This is not a developmental role. The selected candidate must bring direct experience, sound judgment, and the ability to operate independently with minimal oversight. The role requires a technically elite performer who can lead high-level architecture discussions, advise Government and military leaders, engage effectively with vendors, and help drive cybersecurity decisions across systems requiring Authorities to Operate (ATOs).

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the senior cybersecurity engineering subject matter expert for JIATF-401 across enterprise, operational, cloud, hybrid, and vendor-supported environments.

  • Lead and advise on cybersecurity architecture, system design, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and risk-informed technical decision-making.

  • Translate mission and operational requirements into secure system design considerations, cybersecurity requirements, and implementation priorities.

  • Lead or support high-level technical discussions involving network architecture, cloud security design, boundary protection, system interoperability, and security control implementation.

  • Assess cybersecurity risks across government-managed and vendor-managed systems and recommend practical mitigation strategies aligned to mission needs.

  • Drive cybersecurity integration across systems pursuing initial authorization, reauthorization, major changes, or ongoing ATO sustainment.

  • Review and advise on security architectures, implementation approaches, control inheritance strategies, test plans, technical artifacts, and assessment results.

  • Participate in program reviews, design reviews, integrated product teams, engineering discussions, and senior stakeholder engagements as the organization’s cybersecurity engineering lead.

  • Coordinate with Program Management Offices (PMOs), mission owners, system owners, security teams, and vendors to resolve issues affecting system authorization, compliance, and interoperability.

  • Provide expert consultation on cybersecurity impacts associated with cloud adoption, cross-domain/system interfaces, externally provided services, and defense industrial base partnerships.

  • Help align technical solutions with applicable Department of War (DoW), Joint, interagency, and organizational cybersecurity requirements.

  • Communicate clearly and credibly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leaders, action officers, engineers, program personnel, and contractors.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in cybersecurity, information assurance, engineering, computer science, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated senior-level experience in cybersecurity engineering, security architecture, or a closely related field.

  • Direct experience supporting RMF and ATO activities for DoW information systems.

  • Experience with cloud, hybrid, and networked environments, including cybersecurity design and implementation considerations.

  • Experience supporting or assessing complex systems with multiple stakeholders, security dependencies, and vendor involvement.

  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity risk management, security control implementation, and system authorization processes.

  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment without hand-holding.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage credibly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to represent the organization effectively during meetings, reviews, and coordination with senior leaders, mission partners, and contractors.

  • Active CISSP.

Desired:

  • Experience in Joint, interagency, or other highly operational multi-stakeholder environments.

  • Experience advising on high-level network architecture, enterprise integration, and cloud security strategy.

  • Experience with vendor-heavy ecosystems and defense industrial base coordination.

  • Experience supporting systems with significant ATO challenges, including externally provided services and inherited control models.

  • Experience briefing senior leaders and advising government decision-makers on cybersecurity risks and options.
