About this Consultant, Data Engineer - Reference Data Management role at Nationwide

Nationwide · Hybrid · Ohio - Columbus, One Nationwide Plaza
Are you passionate about being part of a team at a Fortune 100 company with nearly $70 billion in annual sales that delivers extraordinary care to help individuals and businesses prepare for and protect their future? If so, then Nationwide Financial could be the place for you! At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers and partners are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.

This role is an individual contributor with a hybrid work expectation (2 days per week in the office). It is our intention to fill this role in Columbus, Ohio or Scottsdale, Arizona, however, on occasion, applications from internal candidates that are working remotely who bring critical industry skills and relevant experience may be considered.

Why this role matters

Product and fund data supports important business processes across Nationwide. In this role, you’ll help develop a governed reference data capability that makes this information easier for teams and systems to use consistently. You’ll help establish trusted data definitions, clear stewardship practices, and reliable ways to share updates across the organization.

You’ll also contribute to Nationwide’s broader enterprise data strategy by helping extend this capability to additional data domains. Your work will support high-quality, traceable data and help teams deliver dependable insights and services.

The opportunity

Embedded within Nationwide Financial’s business organization, this is a hands-on technical role focused on configuring, integrating, and operating the Semarchy reference data management platform. You’ll work close to the business while serving as the technical practitioner who turns business requirements into platform models, workflows, data loads, integrations, and maintained views and APIs. Semarchy is designed to be configured around business data and stewardship needs; you’ll ensure the resulting data is reliable, secure, and easy to use. Direct Semarchy experience is valuable, alongside practical data engineering and governance skills.

You’ll work with business data owners and stewards, who define the meaning of each data set, identify authoritative sources, and make business decisions about what is correct. You’ll configure and support the solution based on those decisions, including business rules and access controls, and stay engaged as data changes and issues arise. Business ownership stays with the domain; your contribution is the technical implementation and operation of the capability.

What you’ll do

Semarchy Consultant

  • Partner with business data owners and stewards to understand reference data needs, then translate their decisions into Semarchy models—for example, product and fund entities, attributes, relationships, and hierarchies.
  • Configure validation and match/merge rules, along with authoring and approval workflows, so updates follow agreed business rules and stewardship practices.
  • Recommend practical role and access patterns for people who create, review, and approve data; support new domains and users as they adopt the platform.

Semarchy Data Engineer

  • Build and operate data loads and integrations that bring product and fund reference data from source systems into Semarchy and deliver approved data to Snowflake, the primary consumption path for most downstream applications, while supporting other required integrations.
  • Maintain views and APIs that provide governed access where needed, without coupling consumers to the platform’s internal tables—for example, supporting an application that retrieves current, approved fund codes.
  • Monitor pipelines, investigate failures, and reconcile records across sources, Semarchy, and destinations; add checks for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Break requirements into technical work, estimate delivery, and apply secure engineering practices as data flows and integrations are built and maintained.

Data Governance Advisor

  • Work with data owners and stewards to document definitions and identify critical data elements—for example, clarifying what a product or fund code represents and the rules it must meet.
  • Support quality profiling, lineage, metadata, and documentation so users can understand where reference data comes from, what it means, and how it should be used.
  • Help embed governance standards in Semarchy workflows and quality checks, and partner with governance teams to address data issues and support adoption.

What success looks like

Business and technology teams can rely on well-defined, governed product and fund data; updates are more controlled and traceable; and data can be shared across systems with fewer manual steps and less dependence on individual knowledge.

This role does not qualify for employer sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT extension program.
