Transform lives, every single day

Do you want a career that means more? At Anglicare Sydney, we bring the strength, the support and the strategy to make it happen.

We’re a well-respected not-for-profit that’s been serving people in need for over 170 years. Our vision is simple yet powerful: Jesus Christ honoured, lives enriched and communities strengthened.

As our Community Chaplain - Housing, you’ll create connections in the community to give help for today and hope for tomorrow among marginalised people in Port Kembla, including within Anglicare’s Safe and Affordable Housing facility there.

Working alongside Port Kembla Anglican Church and Anglicare services, you’ll build genuine relationships and combine practical care, pastoral ministry and gospel friendship to help people experience connection, belonging and hope.

Be welcomed into a compassionate, respectful and purpose-driven community where we don’t just talk about values - we live them.

Your opportunity

This is an outward-focused ministry role for someone with a genuine heart for people who may experience disadvantage, isolation, mental health challenges or disconnection from church and community.

You’ll spend time where people are - building relationships through one-to-one conversations, community activities and practical support. You’ll help connect people with services that can meet their physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, while creating opportunities to explore faith and connect with the life of the local church.

Working in partnership with Port Kembla Anglican Church, Anglicare Housing and our Community & Mission services, you’ll help strengthen the bridge between church, housing and community.

With compassion and a servant heart, you will:

  • Build genuine relationships with people in the Port Kembla community, including residents of Anglicare’s Safe and Affordable Housing.

  • Provide pastoral support and gospel friendship, creating opportunities for people to explore faith and connect with Jesus.

  • Connect people with practical support through Port Kembla Anglican Church, Anglicare and other community service providers.

  • Develop and facilitate community activities, evangelistic courses and life-skills programs that welcome and engage people experiencing disadvantage.

  • Equip and encourage church members to build relationships with people in the community and strengthen the ministry partnership between Anglicare and the parish.

What you’ll bring

You’re a humble, relational and servant-hearted Christian leader who is comfortable meeting people where they are.

You have a heart for people experiencing disadvantage and understand that meaningful ministry starts with trust, consistency and genuine relationships. You’re able to communicate the gospel clearly while also recognising and responding compassionately to people’s practical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.

You’ll bring a gospel-centred, Bible-based and relational approach to ministry, together with the ability to work collaboratively with church leaders, Anglicare teams, volunteers and community organisations.

What’s required:

  • A mature Christian faith with reformed and evangelical theological convictions and the ability to communicate the gospel clearly.

  • Demonstrated pastoral ministry experience with people from a range of backgrounds, including people experiencing disadvantage or mental health challenges.

  • Willingness to be or become a member who regularly attends Port Kembla Anglican Church.

  • Strong relational, communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to recruit, equip and encourage volunteers in ministry.

  • Current Working with Children Check, or willingness to obtain one.

What’s preferred:

  • Theological qualifications from an evangelical training institution, or currently working towards relevant theological training.

  • Pastoral experience within a church or community setting.

  • Experience in community ministry, outreach or ministry with people experiencing disadvantage.

  • Pastoral care training, or willingness to undertake Anglicare pastoral care training.
