Position Summary/Purpose: Grand Canyon University (GCU) maintains relationships with nonprofit organizations identified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) by virtue of their charitable programs. The collective mission of 501(c)(3) organizations in the Phoenix Valley is to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to those residents’ needs.

GCU maintains a partnership with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul located at 2120 S. 3rd Drive, Phoenix, AZ, 85003. St. Vincent de Paul provides services to the homeless, food boxes for the food-insecure, medical/dental care for uninsured patients, and housing/shelter for the unhoused. The CSLP student worker’s work schedule is dependent on the hours of operations and needs of St. Vincent de Paul; however, CSLP student workers may not work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e., fall/spring).

CSLP: This position has been reviewed and approved as Community Service as defined by 34 CFR 675.2(b). Per 34 CFR 675.2(b), community services are defined as, “Services which are designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their need.” These services must be open and accessible to the community.

As an FWS-CSLP approved position, its services will be offered to non-GCU community members (i.e., local residents).

Primary Responsibilities /Accountabilities/ Essential Functions:

Location: St. Vincent de Paul Watkins Main Campus - 2120 S. 3rd Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85003

Warehouse hours: Tuesday – Saturday 7:00am – 2:30pm

• Quality Control (QC): Inspect donated canned goods for expiration dates and sort them into appropriate categories for distribution.
• Scan Line Operations: Assist in scanning and sorting food items donated by outside agencies to be routed to the appropriate SVdP departments.
• Inventory Support: Help manage and organize Starbucks food donations and other perishable items.
• Community Food Distribution: Support setup, operation, and cleanup of our bi-weekly Saturday food distributions to the public.
• Warehouse Operations: Use pallet jacks to move inventory, sweep, and maintain cleanliness, and assist with general organization.
• Volunteer Engagement: Lead and direct volunteer groups in various tasks, ensuring a positive and productive experience for all participants.
• Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift ≥50 pounds and be comfortable working in a warehouse environment.

Experience/Education:

• Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a bachelor’s program or master’s program.
• Maintain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
• Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.
