JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Vice President, Project Management and Construction leads how BHC plans and delivers its capital projects. You will own the overall delivery of all construction projects within existing and new properties. These will include capex projects, renovations, historic restoration and new construction. You are accountable for delivering each project on time, within budget, and to BHC’s standards. You own the overall project delivery plan and construction execution, and you coordinate design milestones with budget, procurement, construction, and operational readiness.
This is an executive role with real influence over how BHC shapes Charleston. You will partner with ownership, finance, and operations, and work closely with the Vice President, Design and Construction Planning who owns design direction and leads the design team.
We are looking for a leader who sets the standard through presence and sound judgment, invests in the growth of the people around them, and creates the clarity that lets a project team do its best work.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project Delivery
- Lead delivery of BHC’s active and upcoming capital projects, with accountability for scope, schedule, budget, safety, and quality from planning and preconstruction through opening and closeout.
- Lead preconstruction planning with design, finance, and operations, including constructability, cost estimates, project schedules, contractor strategy, and long lead procurement.
- Align design, finance, procurement, contractors, and operations around an agreed project plan, and track milestones, dependencies, risks, and decisions.
- Resolve delivery issues early and keep leadership informed of significant risks and decisions requiring approval.
- Select, contract, and manage general contractors, construction managers, and key trade partners, and set the tone for how BHC shows up on a job site.
- Build and manage project budgets, track commitments and change orders, and give leadership an early and honest view of cost and risk.
- Plan construction sequencing across the portfolio, including work in occupied and operating properties, so the guest experience is protected while the work proceeds.
- Lead permitting, inspections, and code compliance, including historic preservation requirements, and maintain strong relationships with city and regulatory partners.
- Hold the quality of what is built to the standard the design intends, in partnership with the Vice President, Design and Construction Management.
- Partner with property leaders on commissioning, building systems training, turnover documentation, and operational handoffs so every project opens ready for service. Oversee punch list completion, project closeout, and resolution of warranty issues.
Leadership and Standards
- Build a strong project team, coach project leaders with clear and timely feedback, and create opportunities for colleagues to stretch and take on greater responsibility.
- Create the processes, reporting, and delivery standards that make each project run more smoothly than the last.
- Communicate with ownership, finance, and operations with clarity and consistency, and keep teams informed during periods of change.
- Represent BHC with credibility and polish to owners, partners, public officials, and the community.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Experience and Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 15+ years leading complex construction projects, ideally in luxury hospitality, historic restoration, or high-end mixed use.
- Record of delivering large projects on schedule and on budget while protecting quality.
- Experience leading preconstruction planning, including constructability, cost estimating, contractor strategy, and procurement.
- Experience aligning design, finance, and operations teams around a single delivery plan.
- Experience carrying projects through commissioning, closeout, and warranty resolution.
- Deep working knowledge of contracts, procurement, cost management, scheduling, and risk.
- Experience navigating historic preservation and municipal review, preferably in Charleston or a comparable market.
- Experience building and developing leaders and project teams.
- Proficiency with project management and cost tracking systems.
