Job Description:

Every summer, about 300,000 people head to the Brainerd Lakes for a week at the lake. The people who live here get it all year, and towns across the area rely on Essentia to care for them. As Essentia Health’s next Vice President, Administrator, you’ll lead the region’s hospital and be a leader in the community you call home.

That hospital is St. Joseph’s Medical Center, a nationally recognized 162-bed regional hospital. You’ll also oversee our clinics across the Brainerd Lakes Area. People here are proud of their hospital, and for good reason. St. Joseph’s has 24/7 cardiac catheterization, a cancer center, a Level III trauma center, a broad range of surgical services and a new orthopedic center in Baxter. As the senior Essentia leader in the region, where we’re the largest employer, you’ll be someone people look up to, inside the hospital and out.

There’s a great deal of opportunity to build on in Brainerd and Baxter. Essentia Health sees the community as the regional hub for care across this part of Minnesota, and you’ll have the support of a health system with more than 16,000 people as you expand services, bring more care closer to home, and develop innovative models—including virtual care—that extend access and connect patients to the services they need across a broader footprint. As part of a clinically integrated delivery system committed to strengthening local access, you’ll help ensure patients can receive high-quality care as close to home as possible. You’ll work alongside an experienced, dedicated local team that has accomplished a great deal for the Brainerd community and help accelerate that progress in partnership with colleagues across Essentia. You’ll report to Essentia’s Senior Vice President of Operations, a leader who welcomes new ideas and invests the time and energy needed to develop the leaders around her.

Education Qualifications:

Master’s degree in health care administration, business administration, or a related field.

The Role:

• Lead St. Joseph’s Medical Center and our Brainerd Lakes Area clinics. Nursing and ambulatory leadership report to you.
• Own the budget and operating results for the region, working hand in hand with your finance partner.
• Leverage Essentia’s systemwide expertise and best practices while bringing a mindset of integration, collaboration, and adoption to the local market—ensuring proven standards take root and are thoughtfully adapted when doing so better serves patients.
• Grow services in Brainerd and Baxter so more patients can get their care close to home with Essentia.
• Partner with physicians and clinical leaders to design and implement innovative care models—including virtual care—that expand access, reduce barriers, and help patients receive the right care sooner, closer to home.
• Represent Essentia in the community. Expect to serve on the chamber board, get involved with service clubs, work with Foundation donors and build a local Director’s Council.
• Keep a good working relationship with our labor partners, together with Human Resources.
• Hire and develop your directors and managers, and encourage them to get involved in the community too.

Required Experience:

• Five or more years of progressive health care management experience at the director level or above in hospital or clinic operations.
• Executive experience leading a hospital, multiple sites or a service line, with results in finance, operations and quality.
• Strong understanding of healthcare finance, including P&L responsibility.
• A track record of working with physician leaders to get things done.
• Experience leading change and making it last.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Seven or more years of progressive leadership, including multi-site or market integration experience.
• Experience as an administrator, president, COO or VP at a regional or rural hospital that’s part of a larger health system.
• Experience in a highly matrixed health system.
• Experience growing services or launching new care models, including virtual care.
• Board, civic or foundation involvement.
• Experience in a union environment.

Work Location:

This is an on-site role in Brainerd, Minnesota. We expect you to live in the Brainerd Lakes Area and be an active leader in the community.
