Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other.  We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

As a Value Chain Designer, you'll help shape how products move from concept to customer across a global enterprise. You'll work closely with stakeholders across Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Engineering, Purchasing, Operations, and Quality to tackle complex challenges, optimize processes, and drive meaningful improvements in cost, quality, delivery, and customer outcomes.

In this highly visible role, you'll develop value-stream models, uncover opportunities for improvement, and lead initiatives that improve cost, quality, delivery, and customer outcomes. Many of the challenges you'll tackle span multiple functions, requiring someone who can connect people, processes, and data to solve complex business problems. If you enjoy influencing change, driving continuous improvement, and seeing the measurable impact of your work, this role offers exceptional exposure and opportunity.

What makes this role exciting:

Few roles offer the breadth of exposure and business impact of a Value Chain Designer. Acting as a strategic connector across the organization, you'll solve complex challenges that often exist between functions, bringing structure, process discipline, and analytical rigor to drive meaningful results.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys understanding how the entire business operates, not just a single function. You'll move between technical and commercial discussions, uncover root causes, and influence decisions that improve end-to-end performance. With a constant variety of projects and opportunities to learn, you'll build broad business knowledge while helping shape the future of the value chain.

What you will do:

Business Process Design & Value Chain Optimization

  • Design and implement new business processes and enhancements to existing processes to improve end-to-end value chain performance.

  • Develop current-state and future-state network value-stream models.

  • Evaluate value chain workflows and identify opportunities to improve operational effectiveness.

  • Document process flows, dependencies, decision points, and organizational handoffs.

  • Develop sustainable solutions that improve process performance across multiple business functions.

Root Cause Analysis & Problem Resolution

  • Investigate complex operational, supply chain, manufacturing, quality, and process-related challenges.

  • Apply structured problem-solving methodologies to identify underlying causes of performance gaps.

  • Conduct root cause investigations and recommend corrective actions.

  • Analyze operational data to uncover patterns, risks, constraints, and improvement opportunities.

  • Support implementation of sustainable solutions that prevent recurrence of issues.

Analytical Thinking & Strategic Recommendations

  • Gather and analyze operational, supply chain, logistics, and business performance data.

  • Utilize process maps, flowcharts, Pareto analysis, fishbone diagrams, and other analytical tools.

  • Compare alternative approaches and develop data-driven recommendations.

  • Build business cases that support process improvements and operational transformation initiatives.

  • Present findings and recommendations to business stakeholders.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Supply Chain, Operations, Logistics, and Quality teams.

  • Facilitate alignment across multiple stakeholder groups.

  • Support implementation of revised business processes, tools, and operating methods.

  • Drive adoption of continuous improvement and process excellence principles.

What skills you have:

  • Business Process Design: Knowledge of business process design and the ability to develop techniques that improve organizational performance and operational effectiveness.

  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) concepts, principles, and techniques used to identify and eliminate underlying causes of operational and process-related issues.

  • Process Mapping & Flowcharting: Extensive experience documenting, analyzing, and improving business processes through visual process representation.

  • Business Process Improvement: Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and the ability to implement process enhancements that improve efficiency and business performance.

  • Process Management: Knowledge of tools and techniques used to monitor, control, improve, and sustain business processes.

  • Effective Communications: Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business audiences.

  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of structured approaches used to recognize, evaluate, and resolve organizational and operational problems.

Top candidates will also have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Operations Management, Business, or related field desired.

  • Experience in manufacturing, heavy equipment, logistics, or industrial operations environments.

  • Knowledge of value chain engineering, logistics optimization, and operational excellence principles.
