Position Overview:

The Underwriter, Casualty Team, is responsible for the evaluation, selection, and pricing of new and renewal casualty business—including general liability, products liability, commercial auto, and umbrella/excess policies. The Underwriter works closely with brokers, clients, and internal teams to deliver expert underwriting solutions, maintain profitable underwriting results, and support the organization’s growth strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Evaluate, select, and underwrite new and renewal casualty risks according to company guidelines and risk appetite.

• Analyze insurance applications, reports, loss histories, and other relevant information to assess exposures and determine appropriate terms, conditions, and pricing.

• Develop and negotiate quotes, proposals, and policy terms with brokers and clients.

• Proactively cultivate and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders to drive business opportunities and deliver superior client service.

• Contribute to the achievement of team and company targets for premium growth, profitability, and retention.

• Review and authorize policy wordings, endorsements, and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.

• Stay current on market trends, industry developments, regulatory updates, and competitor activities in the Canadian casualty sector.

• Provide coaching and guidance to Underwriting Assistants and support staff as required.

• Collaborate with actuarial, claims, and risk control teams to set and monitor portfolio performance and resolve complex cases.

• Participate in audits, file reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education, ideally in business, insurance, or a related discipline.

• 2-5 years of casualty (liability) underwriting experience in the Canadian P&C market.

• Progress toward or attainment of CIP, FCIP, or other relevant industry designations; additional technical training in casualty lines is an asset.

• Solid understanding of casualty insurance products, underwriting guidelines, regulations, and rating methodologies.

• Excellent analytical, risk assessment, and decision-making abilities.

• Exceptional negotiation, interpersonal, and written/verbal communication skills.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and exposure to underwriting/rating software (e.g., Guidewire, Policy Works, TAM).

• Bilingualism (English/French) may be an asset depending on region.
