Job Description Summary
UBC Building Operations provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. Trades are the heart and hands of Building Operations. The Trades units provide a wide range of services for the maintenance, repair and operation of all buildings on campus.

Building Operations Bricklayers perform skilled bricklaying work pertaining to construction, maintenance and repairs of buildings; following recognized bricklaying techniques. Is responsible for repair work and new construction utilizing brick, tile, stone, concrete block and other materials as required on projects, including structural and non-structural walls, fireplaces, furnaces, kilns and internal ornamental details.

Organizational Status
Bricklayers report to the Architectural Trades Manager. Bricklayers work both independently as well with associated tradespeople, both at the apprentice and journeyperson level. Daily work assignments and instructions are given by the Head as well as the Sub Head Carpenter

Work Performed
- Requests and obtains materials and equipment required for the work assigned.
- Performs repair work and undertakes new construction on brick, stone, concrete and tile.
- Prepares estimates and produces inspection reports as required.
- Performs emergency call-outs as required.
- Applies caulking compounds.
- Applies concrete and masonry sealers.
- Installs concrete reinforcing rod and wire mesh.
- Concrete finishes slabs and walls.
- Ensures that the workplace is safe and that safe work practices are being followed.
- Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with qualifications and requirements of the job.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Determines the sequence of work, the work methods and equipment to be employed and how best to complete the work based on technical knowledge of the trade and related departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate decisions may result in minor service delays and/or costs.

Supervision Received
Works under general supervision and from oral and written instructions and according to approved procedures.

Supervision Given
Monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) and labourers as the need arises.

Minimum Qualifications
A trade certification to a journeyperson level as a Bricklayer, a valid BC Drivers Licence and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Working knowledge of industrial safety regulations and building codes.
