What can you expect?

As the Tower Technician I, you will work onsite in Alaska, US and will perform telecommunications tower construction, microwave installation, and general construction activities to support new site builds, system upgrades, maintenance, and repair projects throughout Alaska. Working under the direction of the Project Foreman and alongside experienced tower crews, this position assists with tower erection, antenna installation and alignment, grounding, weatherproofing, rigging, and related civil construction activities while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards. The Tower Technician I performs physically demanding work at heights of up to 300 feet in remote and often extreme Alaskan environments and is expected to work collaboratively as a productive member of the construction team while supporting project schedules, operational goals, and continuous skill development.

How will you do it?

  • Perform trade for long hours, day after day, often in adverse conditions, to complete the project at hand.
  • Follow directives from Project Foreman and anyone senior, with the sense of duty to take initiative and always remain productive at work while on the jobsite.
  • Climb telecommunications towers up to 300 feet and perform work safely at height in remote and extreme Alaskan environments.
  • Perform general construction activities including site layout, excavation, foundation work, tower erection, equipment installation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Installation of microwave antennas, systems, and all associated components.
  • Align and cross-polarize existing and newly installed microwave antennas.
  • Installation of all hardware related to telecommunications towers and equipment.
  • Perform grounding, weatherproofing, and testing.
  • Working with a diverse selection of cable types, connectors, and antennas.
  • Assist in performing tower rigging activities and provide crane signaling support during equipment installation and tower construction activities.
  • Perform physically demanding work requiring the use of arms, legs, and full-body movement, including climbing communication towers, balancing, lifting, carrying, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and handling tools, equipment, and materials in a construction or telecommunications environment.
  • Work closely with a variety of other trades.
  • Apply a versatile construction skill set to assist other trades and support overall project completion.
  • Submittal of all necessary paperwork to Project Management and Accounting in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to and perform duties pursuant to the company-wide safety plan.
  • Report any incident, unsafe condition, near miss, or activity that may affect the Company's ability to operate safely, ethically, or profitably.
  • Conduct oneself professionally and represent the Company in a positive manner while on the job or when interacting with customers, vendors, and the public.
  • Work collaboratively as a team member and assist in training or mentoring new employees as experience permits.
  • Cook and clean as necessary in the field quarters.
  • Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Maintain any required certifications mandatory by law or company policy.
  • Work as a “team-player” with co-workers in a respectful and supportive manner.
  • Proactively seek and participate in training and professional development opportunities.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Functions:  

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of construction materials, terminology, methods, and safe work practices.
  • Basic knowledge of climbing gear, rigging, and tower safety, or ability and willingness to learn these skills.
  • Ability to recognize hazards, assess risks, and follow established safety procedures while working at heights and in remote environments.
  • Ability to learn and apply telecommunications installation techniques, equipment, and industry best practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic installation and equipment issues and report findings accurately to supervisors.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, and other physically demanding environments.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail to ensure quality installations and reliable system performance.
  • Ability to adapt to changing jobsite conditions, project priorities, and customer requirements while maintaining quality workmanship.
  • Proficiency using hand and power tools, including basic rigging techniques, rope handling, and knot tying.
  • Ability to safely operate electronic test equipment and specialized telecommunications tools.
  • Ability to safely use harnesses, belts, ropes, and any other required protective equipment gear required to meet all duties of position.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines, and general time management.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), have a high degree of attention to detail, follow work rules, and adhere to the project schedule.
  • Ability to remain focused, exercise sound judgment, and perform work safely in physically demanding and high-risk environments
  • Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively during safety meetings, project briefings, and daily planning sessions.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to live and work cooperatively with team members in shared remote field accommodations while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to travel to remote places for work-related purposes (up to 100% of time).
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule.

Who is STG Inc. looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience in the construction field required.
  • Tower Safety and Rescue Certification required within 3 months of hire.
  • Rigging certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Company’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving, and background screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six (6) months of experience in tower erection in rural arctic environments preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred; ability to obtain certification upon hire required.

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. STG operates in a fast-paced, project-driven environment where work is performed primarily at remote construction sites throughout Alaska. This position requires frequent travel to project locations and may involve transportation by aircraft, helicopter, boat, barge, ATV, snow machine, or other specialized equipment depending on project requirements and accessibility.

Employees regularly work outdoors in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, wind, freezing temperatures, and uneven terrain. Tower Technicians perform work at elevated heights, including climbing telecommunications towers up to 300 feet while utilizing required fall protection equipment. Work may involve exposure to construction hazards, heavy equipment, energized systems, noise, dust, and other jobsite conditions while following all Company safety policies and industry safety standards.

Employees may be required to work extended shifts, rotating schedules, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to meet project schedules and operational demands. Depending on project location, employees may stay in shared field housing or temporary camp accommodations for extended periods and are expected to maintain a professional, respectful, and collaborative environment while deployed.
