The Summer 2027 Software Engineer Undergraduate Internship provides students with an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on software engineering experience through direct exposure to Highmark Health's technology organizations and digital product teams. This internship is designed to develop the next generation of diverse engineering professionals by providing real-world experience in modern software development, agile delivery methodologies, cloud technologies, and enterprise-scale application development.

As a member of an active software engineering squad, the intern will work alongside experienced software engineers, architects, product owners, quality engineers, and business partners to build, enhance, and support technology solutions that drive business outcomes and improve customer experiences. Participants will gain exposure to all phases of the software development lifecycle, from solution design and technical analysis through coding, testing, deployment, and ongoing application support.

The program provides hands-on training in modern software engineering practices and exposes participants to a variety of technology career paths within the organization. Interns will contribute directly to the day-to-day objectives of development teams while building technical expertise in programming, cloud platforms, web technologies, databases, automation, and AI-assisted development tools. Through mentorship, technical training, collaborative projects, and real-world application development, interns will strengthen their engineering skills and prepare for future full-time software engineering opportunities.

Typical responsibilities include designing and developing software solutions, writing and testing production-ready code, participating in Agile ceremonies, collaborating with cross-functional teams, leveraging AI-powered development tools, conducting technical research and prototyping, supporting application testing and troubleshooting efforts, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality software products.

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

This job has the goal of providing the opportunity to acquire practical experience through direct exposure to the related business line(s) and to develop the next generation of diverse business professionals.  To that end, the program will provide hands-on training and experience in the business line, expose the various career opportunities in the business line and related areas, and prepare participants for positions in the business.

Typical responsibilities include, providing services to the day-to-day operating objectives of the assigned area, participating in projects and programs appropriate to the needs of the assigned area, participating in the planning and implementation of projects and initiatives, conducting research and reporting including recommendations or proposals for action.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

• Full or part-time enrollment in an accredited college or university baccalaureate program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field.
